marky:
I have been told that Harrisons have never, EVER sold a vehicle that saw service with them and that there are over sixty Scammells still in their ownership. This is unconfirmed, but highly likely.
****! Stil at least we know they are safe there. So they still have their B series there then? starts to salivate what engines did they have? Gardners I suppose?
I’ve been told about Harrisons, but while they are stil in the throes of sorting out what they still possess, I think it would be stepping on their toes if I divulge anything else.
When I said that they have kept everything - I meant EVERYTHING.
So is there going to be a big sale at some poiint or do you think they will try and sell off as one lot as a going concern? Could be a way bigger sale than Donington was on Saturday if so.
Bits & bats may well get sold to people, (and may have already) but I seriously doubt that the Harrisons will let it all go in one big sale - that’s not how they are.
They’ve lived with all that tackle over the years, and its their private possessions. What they decide to let go will no doubt be sold, but I can’t see a big auction coming any time soon.
FWIW - a house clearance would’ve been bigger than the auction at Donington. I would be very surprised if there is another one next year. The list of lots grows shorter with every passing year, and some of the reserves that are put on them are ridiculous - what’s the point of putting stuff in the auction if you place a whacking great reserve on it?
There was a strong security presence there this year after the high level of thefts from stalls last time. The Police were even booked for the day to patrol the hall - something I find particularly sad. It had been said that the thefts were attributable to the high numbers of ‘travellers’ who visited last year’s gathering - notice the word is in inverted commas?
Given the escalated security this year, I thought a round of applause must go to the chap stood at the Kelsey Publishing stand who was browsing the goods on sale. He was leafing a magazine and (after spotting something of interest) tore out a section of a page, folded it up, put it in his shirt pocket and placed the magazine back on the stall - what a guy!!!
With idiots like that - is it any wonder there’s more security staff?
Perhaps Donnington will go downhill just like the old RTS Auctions at Peterborough a few years ago.
It seemed that the same stuff was going through time and time again, and as Marky said, with stupid reserve prices.
I noticed a strong Police presence on Saturday which is not something you normally see at shows - but then again with such large crowds confined to a realtively small area with so many items on sale, it is always going to attract thieves.
I just saw on this thread about turbo powered gardeners and no Mcgovern the bulk waste contractor from west london converted a few micky mouse fodens with 180 gardners to to turbo power using a ford d series turbo
about 15 yrs ago or so i had a scammell crusader FWX 183T was the reg, i broke down not to far from harrisons and limped to their yard where i stayed for half the day while i waited for a tow, what a place to be when your driving a scammell! had the pleasure of meeting the old man who let me in the office and gave me a tour of the place, what you can see from the road is only a bit, you should see round the back or in the shed, lots of highwaymans under sheets, real old 8 leggers even chain driven tractor unit, even the office was astep back in time with the old bakerlite phone! as for the 2nd axle he told me they were added to make them legal for 32t as the old highwayman would have a max of 28t gross when built, and they were old steer axles robbbed from other trucks and welded at the linkage so they would not steer.
on another note in the 60s and 70s my old man used to drive a highwayman reg 660VMA for chettles, northants, which was ex shellmex bp as it was then called i used to go regular from wellingborough to widnes, was a good run back then, now i’m still in the bonneted trucks but in canada, but lots of fond memories.
Hi everyone, this is a recent picture of my old F12 Globetrotter which is still in regular work and will be for quite a time yet. Early January she went to Barcelona then on to Paris, back for a fortnight and then off to Milan and Dusseldorf and whatever can be squeezed in between. She certainly enjoys ‘mile crunching’ and except for normal wear and tear has not let me down.
