Who knows London well?

Hi

Could anyone tell me the best way to get to Waterloo on Monday morning for 10am in an 18t?
Will be coming from the M40, thinking its gonna be a traffic nightmare.

Thanks in advance!

M40,A40,turn right at White City, follow through Shepards Bush and Earls Court down to the river, follow to Vauxhall Bridge, turn right over the bridge turn left at the MI6 HQ then just follow your nose for about 3 mile. Good luck.

Just the trick. Nice one gooner!

First rule for London newbies- allow PLENTY of time! In normal driving conditions it would take you about an hour from the M40/A40 junction, but that would mean you will be on M40 slap bang in the rush hour (or, to be more realistic, the “rush three hours”!). To be sure of hitting your 10.00 deadline, you may have to sit in the traffic from about 0700 or 0730.
Sorry to be so pessimistic, but that’s the way it is these days.
I regularly used to be loaded for East London from the West & found it best to be through the middle by 0700 (start at stupid o’clock!) then take a 45 minute break outside the customer’s yard while waiting for him to open up.
That was, of course, before the introduction of lorry bans, Boris tax, etc.

Next question must be is your wagon LEZ compliant? Big charges for those older motors that don’t comply…

take a 45 on the outskirts

Just had a thought there’s a lowish bridge just past Chelsea Bridge sorry don’t know the height but if it is a bit low for ya go over Chelski Bridge then over r/ bout then do a left towards Covent Garden market then to Vauxhall Bridge.
Not sure of the bridge heights over Chelski Bridge but d/d buses get under them.
Good luck.

From memory it’s either 14’6 or 14’9, so shouldn’t cause a problem assuming the OP’s 18t is ‘normal’ height.

To avoid any bridges you can stay on the A40 all the way to Euston turning right after the underpass opposite the station down Southampton Row A4200.

Follow that all the way down and go around the Aldwych, then pick up signs for Waterloo bridge to the left.

Gram67 does that not incur a congestion charge payment ?

Yes indeed it does!

After the underpass, get into the right hand lane until you can go no further, it eventually becomes the filter for the right turn into Upper Woburn Place (it becomes Southampton Row further down the road). At the bottom of Southampton Row you’ll see a stone building right in front of you, get into the middle lane and follow the building keeping it to your right. The road then becomes four lanes of one way traffic.

Have you ever tried reversing across those four lanes into Somerset House at the end? Absolute nightmare…!

Get into either lane one or lane two… You’ll pass a church in the middle of the four lanes… Don’t get into lane three or four as it’ll take you back around to the way you’ve come. Turn left after Somerset House (big building on left hand side).

the 1st best bit of advise that anyone can give you about london is
‘dont venture inside the M25’
but if you have too then the 2nd best bit of advise is
‘take your 45 before proceeding inside the M25’
