Who is responsible?

the maoster:
Here’s a question then; on the rare occasion (for a driving God  ) that I infringe I do two printouts, one that I hand in after 28 days and one that stays stapled into my diary until that day has been overwritten on the card. So my question is how does any official bod KNOW that you’ve done a printout? Is there a record made on the machine to this effect? If not, why do we bother keeping them for 28 days?

I don’t think theres any way of recording that a printout has been made. By printing it out at the time it shows you are aware you have made an infringement which is more what they would be interested in. If you were getting infringements and not being aware of it, then I think they would be more concerned.

I normally check there is a good bit of paper in. Never knew I needed to keep spares! What can’t the authorities provide their own paper if they need to do printouts?

Probably for the same reason that they don’t provide diesel when testing yours!

so, how do you know when the date in question has been overwritten?

As the regulations dont specify how long your spare roll is,you could just tear off a footlong strip and keep that in the glove box.

Ignition on, go into tacho menu, display driver 1, 24 hr day, scroll down as far as it goes. Just done mine as I type this and it goes back to 01/07/14, therefore any printouts in my posession that predate that are now in the bin.

You dont need rolls of paper only enough in the machine for one printout,
carrying a spare in your bag is a good idea though.

Extract from drivers hours rules :

" carry sufficient supplies of type-approved print roll on board the vehicle so that a printout can be produced at an enforcement officer’s request;"

you don’t actually need a roll in the head unit

Is the correct answer.

As it happens I never have a roll in the tacho. I have a box full in my bag which is always with me, but funnily enough the weekend drivers can’t manage to find the fuel or ad blue pumps but can manage to work their way through a full tacho roll over the weekend and as this for some bizarre reasons really twists my melons I never leave one in for them to abuse!
