Well you’re a ■■■■■
£11ph for first 8
£13.75 overtime & first 4 on Sat.
£16.25 Sunday or after 4 on Saturday.
Class 2 Hiab. South East.
No nights out, no stoppages for breaks. About 2 Saturday mornings per year.
I think I’m doing OK.
Salaried, 23k pa, class 2 plant delivery.
Mon - Fri, 8 til 5
No o/t and no saturdays
Back in yard every night by around 4.30.
Not bad considering builders merchants in my area pay around 20k for class 2 hi-ab.
£6.50ph driving class 2 through agency.
And the worst part about it is, I’ve got my class 1 (just can’t find any jobs where I’m allowed to use it, as i’ve not held it for min 2 yrs)
I got sick of it after years of patiently putting up & hoping things would change. Ended up ditching it to work in a bar where I was actually making close to £2 more for every hour believe it or not! And for doing what? … For basically sweeping the floor and serving drinks. £2 per hour more than I would for being a professional driver in charge of an 18 tonne lorry plus grafting like a bloodhound!
Yup the mind boggles…
Only forced to come back to driving after the bar changed ownership n ppl got laid off.
Paid on a salary for 48 hrs, ( never do that amount though) Works out at £12.29 per hr. which is a bloody good rate
in deepest devon. Downside is 5 / 7 rota, (only 4 sundays out of every 33 weeks though.)been there 7 years and
have never done full 48 hrs yet, but then i’m not a “proper driver”, I’m a trolley dollie.
Used to drive a truck got fed up and now working in a fish and chip shop .
Lunch from 1130 till 1330 and evening 1700 till 2100 frying fish and chips
for 5 days per week . In my own bed every night and now fed up with fish and chips
so dont eat them any more .
£10.75 per hour and as much fish and chips that i want .
Better than flogging your nuts off in a truck .IMOP
Thanks
Quirky

Which train operating company is that?

I’d love to see a payslip that showed those figures.

And me. Although I think I’d get bored very quickly.
But getting paid that much to be bored is a small price to pay
I applied but failed due to been colour blind.
Have a look here. Youve got nothing to lose : traindriver.org/train-operat … -jobs.html
On Salary as most of the northern fish drivers are, it has to be this way because if no fish then no pay and that would not work.
Most are between 500 and 600 a week 52 weeks a year but thats including nights out ,my average nights out last year per week was 3.2 nights.
So take 3.2 nights off my salary and it works out at around £15 net per hr for all time worked or £21 net per hr for every hour i drive.
A couple of companies i work with, pay 350 aweek net salary then so much a box of fish when they work, and some weeks they can earn £800 a week if busy, but as i say no fish and they drop to the £350 a week salary.
Klunk
Seems my £8.11hr for class 2 hiab is crap, funny how I never see jobs in the jobcentre that pay more

I doubt you’d get bored Dar.
Ive been in a fair few driving cabs in my time as my job did to a certain extent require me to be there.
Theres alot going on with the job.
Route knowledge for starters. You have to ‘sign’ for a route, you cant just ‘go anywhere’. Route knowledge tests dictate that you know every signal, every speed restriction board, every gradient, every station etc in your minds eye! That route could be Penzance to London paddington like some of the drivers in my area do! Imagine having to drive a train in thick fog at 100mph and having to stop the ■■■■■■■ at a specific station without over running it! An HST (was known as the intercity 125 back in the day) comes in at around 370 tons and wont stop on a dime.
And thens theres “OTMR” or on train monitoring recording, this is the ‘black box’, it’l even tell the down loader whent the screen wipers were operated or when and at what speed the brakes were applied as well as power position, when the warning horn was used etc etc.
This is all downloaded regularly to look at your train handling and technique. There is also no + 10% in speed allowance here, you gota be bang on!! or risk disaplinary action. Run under the current line speed and you’l be late.
You then have 3 saftey systems to be opperated. AWS (automatic warning system) which ‘goes off’ every time a signal is passed with a restrictive aspect- ie, anything but green. If you dont cancel out the warning within 3 seconds, the brakes come on full and you’l stop = more ■■■■ hitting the fan. You then have TPWS (train protection warning system) this measures the trains speed via transponders in the track, to fast past a restrictive signal and again the system will stop the train. It’l also stop the train if the driver SPAD’s a siganl (siganl passed at danger) = MAJOR ■■■■ hits the fan!! and you’l normally be suspended pending inquiry.
And last but not least the dead man system, if there has been no change in i think 60 seconds of any controls or speed, an alarm sounds and again has to be cancelled by the driver normally by a foot peddle within 3 seconds, again the brakes come on if not.
I went for the apptitude tests for a driver about 10 years ago, was the hardest thing i ever did next to my C+E, I failed the first time but passed at the second go, and those are just to qaulify for the interview stage! there were a couple of airline pilots on my course who both failed the tests.
The rule book is a big binder about 3 inches thick you have to know front to back.
In the end I didnt go for it and knowing what i know now im glad i didnt!
Train drivers earn their money i tell ya!

I stand corrected. As an outsider I never realised it took such aptitude.
small voice I drive a London suburban train - 60 mph maximum and I get very bored
