a Scammell hitch ■■

thats what i thought dennis

I think it may be a Scammell self coupling,if it is, units were usually Scammell Scarab(3 wheelers!) or Bedfords used by the railway companies for local distribution.

It has been donkeys years since I saw this, where and when was this taken. cor memories.

thats the motor

by the look of it,it were maybe a tanker motor as the twoo pipes u can see were marked inlet and outlet

Leyland Comet ?

Yep the infamous scammel automatic coupling

Definitely a Leyland Comet. When I was a kid my old man had 3 of these in 29 seater coach form.

good detailed write up here…even the lights and airlines connected automatically…just needed to release the handbrake and fit the trailer number plate.

BLIMEY !!!

I used to use those when I was a night yard shunter at National Carriers about 30 years ago.

The scammel coupling could go under, and attatch to, a fifth wheel plate coupling so it could double up to move ‘normal’ artic trailers.

i passed my class one in a army owned bedford with that coupling and the lights and airlines did,nt connect themselves.
