Which theory bits?

Getting hold of the right person, if they even exist, at DVSA is a nightmare. Their automated routing can divert you to Pearson or DVLA without any warning.

So, I have C1[+E] on acquired rights with the 8250kg overall weight restriction, yet I didn’t do the 35 hours required by 2014 so have never held a DQC. I’m now going for C/CE and am getting conflicting information on which of the modules I need. Some say 2 and 4 will get me a DQC with no mention of what theory I need to then progress to proper HGV. Some say I need to do all four modules including the ruddy awful hazard perception test that I can’t help invoking the sixth sense “this vehicle is going to be a muppet” on, which is not what they’re looking for.

Please help, I’m not used to being this confused. gov.uk is about as much use as a knitted stab vest. I’m not trying to wriggle out of anything, I’ll do the all the theory tests and be happy if I must. I’d just like to know what the giddy frig I’m doing before I try to do it.

You have a choice regards DCPC - either do the the two initial module tests 2 + 4 OR do the 35 hours attendance

Your best choice is to find a LGV trainer who also has the practical LGV training DCPC approved so you can get some of the 35 hours from doing the training = typically 14 hours on C and 14 hours on CE leaving 7 to be gained perhaps by doing a 7 hour tacho course

Thanks ROG. I was aware of the dual path to DCPC but it’s the need, or lack thereof, for module 1a/b (theory and hazard perception) I’m most confused over. That does firm up in my mind the DCPC requirements, though.

Just to reiterate, then, DCPC is DCPC whether you have a puddle jumper licence or a full bendy and you don’t have to do the whole shebang all over again when going from puddle jumpers to proper HGV?

Still looking for a definitive answer on module 1, please.

Once something is done for LGV in regards to theory and dcpc it covers all LGV categories

Mods 1a+1b need to be passed before the first practical LGV test can be taken

Perfect. Thank you, ROG, I can now crack on.

Hey Rog, so just to clarify for my case…

I have 7.5 by grandfather rights and will have a DQC through ADR + 1 day cpc

So to upgrade my license to Class 2 - I just need to do mod 1 and mod 3? or I’ll need to do all 4 modules?

I used to think I was reasonably intelligent until I started trying to figure all this out plus all the rules lol!

Think I just found the answer in your sig link Rog!

“If you already have pre 1997 C1 on your licence then you will only need modules 1 & 3 to obtain a C.”

Bit scary really - so I can get C without knowing anything about walk around checks, safe loading etc. (all the important stuff) Also nothing from the 35 hours CPC!

But I will be able to transport dangerous goods!

■■■■ Me! Now here - gov.uk/book-theory-test

it says you don’t need a theory to upgrade from C1 to C…

When you don’t need a theory test
You don’t need to take a theory test before you book a driving test to upgrade a:
lorry or bus licence licence, eg from category C1 (medium) to category C (large), or to tow a trailer

Sort of true these days as many would need to pass LGV theory before doing a LGV C1 test BUT they really should have done a caveat which said it is different for those with pre 1997 categories

Confirmed by an e-mail I received from DVSA this afternoon. Spot on, ROG, almost word for word. Thanks again.

Thanks fellas - thought for a minute I could get away with just the driving test! Still a bonus don’t have to mess with 2 and 4 though!
