I’m a new driver, passed just a few weeks back and am hoping to start work in the new year. After a bit of research I have come up with two truckers sat navs that are at the top of my list…the tomtom 5150 pro truck and the garmin dezl 760lmt…
I have asked my family for Christmas money instead of presents, that way I get something I need rather than clothes I’ll never wear and 3million paris of skids and socks so I don’t want a cheap one that breaks on the first few trips but want the best for my money…
Also I have been on trucknet looking at sat nav topics for advice but they seem to go off onto’’ buy the Chinese one from ebay’'… I’m a builder by trade and have seen plenty of tradesmen spitting out their dummies through Chinese tools breaking down on the job so it’s a choice of the two mentioned for me…
I’ll be buying off the back of truckers votes who hopefully have experience with the tomtom and garmin so help us out please with your advice,I have already bought a Philips truckers map book and a AA map book and hap google maps on my mobile but as a new driver I think the sat nav could be a help…also merry Christmas to you all and thanks for any advice lol
I’ve fixed that troublesome capslock for you and split it up a bit so that it’s a bit easier to read. dd
I have the 5150 and I can’t fault it. The menu’s are a tad slow to respond but otherwise its great. I got mine for £280 which is quite expensive for a SatNav though.
i passed class 1 about 18 months ago, after a bit of research i bought myself a 5150,i wanted to get the best available because i was brand new to the industry and not so good at reading maps etc.
it is a pretty good piece of kit,its never tried to steer me under a low bridge, keeps away from weight limits wherever possible,is easy to use,and easy to adjust trailer size and weight etc(important for me because we pull extendable trailers)
it is however not 100% perfect, for example if you miss your turning in a town or country road, ignore it! it will try and turn you round basically anywhere, down farm tracks, narrow openings basically anywhere it sees an entrance and exit regardless if size.
it does pick some odd routes at times, this is because of the iq routing,it tries to avoid historically congested roads and leaves them out of the planning not always the best, for example going from thirsk to scarboro mine will always try to send me up the a170 and up sutton bank(not a great idea) simply because york ringroad is always congested
aside from those couple of niggles though it is a great piece of kit when used with a little common sense, its certainly kept me out of trouble (mostly)
Just to let you know that TomToms are manufactured in China too. So if you want to avoid any Sat Navs made there then that’s another to avoid.
Garmins are manufactured in the US i believe.
I’ve covered most of Europe, using a cheap Chinese sat av, the one off Trucktables, and it’s only sent me wrong once. It may not have free updates on the maps, but I would not hesitate to buy another, should I ever need to.
cheers for the replies, I ordered two with halfords, a garmin dezl 760 and the tomtom 5150 pro tuck… the garmin looked quite impressive with the bigger screen but I ended up with the tomtom because they seem to get the best reviews from truckers, I also got £50 knocked off and a free case thrown in because I showed them the cheapest option on the net through amazon knowing halfords price match so that was a bit of a result.I updated it this evening which taken a good while and am hoping to use it soon, got a interview tomorrow…thanks all and happy new year
I’ve just got a TomTom 5150 to replace my Snooper S2000 which did me well for the last 6 odd years, I can’t fault the TomTom at all…
My dad has a cheap Chinese one for 7.5t and he says it works really well too…
