I am a young HGV driver at aged 19 however I have been working pretty much since gaining my licence driving dustcarts for my local council. The job isn’t too bad but it has become quite monotonous doing the same area every week. However I have applied for numerous jobs and been offered to work at Jewsons or Palmer and Harvey and I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have read the forums about Palmer and Harvey and Jewsons but quite a lot of the information is a couple of years old. I have never done multi drop so both jobs would be a shock to the system. Both jobs appeal to me but if anybody has personal experiences with either company would really help me to make my decision.
Can’t help with the companies, but if you are going into Multidrop, get one of these for each county you cover. amazon.co.uk/Philips-Street- … 1849071772
Much better than a satnav imho.
In 3 years of Multidrop, I only had 3 places that I couldn’t find on these maps. 2 were farms that were unnamed in the map and 1 was a new build on a road not on the map.
I had Wiltshire, Gloucester, Somerset, Dorset, Berkshire, North Hampshire, South Hampshire, Oxford and Buckinghamshire. Kept them all in my van, and only took out the ones I needed that day. But for multidrop, they are a godsend.
I would definitely say jewsons were the better choice, much less likely to have to work weekends and they will put you through your hiab training. I would say much more interesting than palmer and Harveys as well.
Yes I’d probably go with the Jewsons, P&H would be lots of supplying garages and shops and the like with sweets etc. Jewsons will give you a challenge, builders merchants never pay top dollar but it’s got to be a challenging job, lots of awkward sites to get around and you’ll get HIAB experience.
It’s a good starting block if you want to get into other HIAB type work, it might not be exactly the same as doing cabins or awkward loads but it’s a lot more usable to an employer than someone who’s delivered some crisps.
I would chooses the jewsons job. Much more challenging and by driving dustcarts you’ll be used to tight places already so your half way there. There’s a palmer and Harvey depot near our yard and to be honest the way some, not all but a fair few off there drivers tear around the estate, cut me up on a roundabout all to get 1 place in front off me heading into the estate I’d say they must be very pushed to get the work done. If I had to drive like a bell end all day to get the work done I’d rather stay on dust carts so I’d take jewsons it’ll be much more challenging and you’ll get to know the local builders, have a yarn and a laugh with them and if you ever need work done you’ll know enough builders etc that’ll help you out.
Is there a 3663 depot near you? Very good money for class two and they always seem to have vacancies as it can be hard work. It’s a nice job if you get a regular run.
