With many options which route do you prefer?Clermont Ferrond,Millau bridge,or Lyon route.?
Would make no odds to me, both have brill views, sit back and enjoy!
depends on how heavy you are running, i use to like going millau bridge if not to heavy,
Well i have done the Reims.Lyon Montpellier and the Paris A20 Limoges route, Never done the Millau route as our boss would not pay the toll unless it was urgent as millau is according to the likes of google via michelin ect the quickest route and lyon the longest
Millau toll is not too bad,30 or 40 euros, but you get a lot of bang for your buck, for a very long stretch of free road before you pay on the viaduct, they have put ugly wind deflectors which obscure the view,on the bridge, maybe drivers were gawking and having RTCs and RTA
s on the bridge.
French Douanes always there and the French ministry do random weight checks, last time some students with hi-viz on got tape measures out to measure the unit and trailer with the Ministry looking on.

I think it was built with those wind deflectors on, I don’t think they’re an added extra since it opened.
according to the tablecloths in andamur restaurant in la jonquera the millau route is the cheapest way by about 40 euros but it does depend how much weight you have as the climb up to the viaduct uses a lot of fuel compared to the route via lyon which is much flatter.
in response to toby’s question though we run from calais to rouen then to chartres then at orlean take the motorway to clermont ferrand and although quite hilly its the cheapest route and avoids paris altogether plus you still get to cross the feat of engineering that is the millau viaduct

I’ve never been on the bridge but i thought I’d read that they had put some additional screens up after the bridge opened as some drivers were having vertigo attacks!

This was it in 2005, I seem to recall going over the bridge in 2008 with boards but don’t know when they were fitted.

Further to the Millais posts,.Just as a footnote, the Knights Templar were active on that route too, not measuring trucks or trailers but building castles and lodging houses for the foot weary crusaders on their way to Palestine to do their thing, i used it with about 15 ton in the back and it most certainly is a very thirsty road .However it appeared to be a beautiful scenic one too, great in the daylight, monotonous during the night, with many long drags downhill and up with scarce parking on services. It,s buyer beware as always, as regards saving any money by using it , forget it.
We always ran that way from about '97 onwards (before the bridge) and found it by far the quickest way to La Jonquera from Calais or Le Havre, running mainly top weight (40 tonnes & + often) but no bother at all, nice run, scenic,at that time few Gendarmes & a few good routiers just off the main drag too. Regularily hit Fitou in 14h30 from Calais, 4h30 off boat to Thivers then 10h next day easy to Fitou if not beyond.

Do you use the N154 as well? Not a bad road. Used it last time I was on the way back from testing and it was so windy it nearly blew me over so headed inland at the first option for Toulouse, Limoges and up that way.
