I would think that the best of the non shedding large breeds would be a Standard Caniche. Most of you will know this as a Poodle but the original standard version, when not cut into silly pom poms as Anglo Saxons tend to treat them are cuddly and courageous at the same time. Just the thing for an Alpine night when the night heater packs up.
I’ve had loads of dogs over the years and was brought up with border collies. I always thought of poodles as a “girly” dog. How wrong I was - we rescued a standard poodle who had been abandoned at the dog “hairdressers”, and he was the most talented, loyal and clever dog I’ve ever had. He used to play football with my lad and his mates and could out dribble most of them. Nothing bothered him unless people came uninvited into our space when he would be quite aggressive towards them until told otherwise. He would do all the basic obedience things without any hassle. Perfect nature - friendly and gentle, well behaved, trustworthy and put up with cats, rabbits, guinea-pigs without any hint of aggression. But best of all, he never shed a single hair If I was to have another dog it would be a poodle.
And he never had a poncy hair cut after we had him!

You’ve confirmed everything I’ve thought and said. I even hate the word ‘poodle’ because of its connotations in the Anglo world and will always use the French once I have explained what I am talking about. I suppose it is hardly surprising since in its original standard form the Caniche was bred as a hunting dog. Certainly not wimpy at all and a gross insult to compare it to Tony Blair.
Ive taken our dog Kipper (dont ask was the wifes choice of name ) a pointer/collie cross out in the wagon a load of times at different companies .just after i passed my c+e and i was in my erf she would love to sit in the passenger seat and sit looking out the window looking really contented or curled up in the passenger side footwell keeping warm
but ive stopped taking her nowadays as she is getting on a bit at 14 and cant move around as good as she used to when she was younger and the fact she has a habit of nicking me sarnies if i dont put the lid on my lunchbox properly
never been a bit of bother either the odd bit of hair but nothing the vacum didnt fix apart from one night when i was up near to mallaig one night when she started whining and howling ,opened the curtain to see a bleeding big stag looking in the side window on the passenger side
Ta for that Dave.
I don’t know if it’s anything to do with the fact that I’m using iPad/iPhone but, when I click on upload f all happens and I just end up back where I started.
