A truck driver sent a message to Radio 2’s Alex Jones this morning claiming to be enroute to Port Elizebeth, South Africa from Grimsby with a heavy wide crane with a 7 vehicle police ■■■■■■, which he says is going to take 2 months to get there, me thinking yeah yeah, until a listener claimed to have seen him out there on the road somewhere, still sceptical about this load being taken all the way by road, would it be feasible to actually do? Or is he giving it a bit of BS (a truck drivers favorite pastime) and is only taking it down to tilbury dock to get it shipped out.
It took two years to get all the required clearances to take it down through France,Spain, and Gibraltar. Down Africa should be ok, the big tyres will easily cope with the rough roads.
Where’s dozy ■■?
Well that’s killed this thread …
the nodding donkey:

I’m not even sure there are roads to get a heavy truck all the way to Port Elizabeth from Gibraltar, much less avoiding war zones. Is it even possible to get from Morocco into Mauritania and down to Senegal? The border used to be closed because of the western Sahara conflict. If going by land through Africa then starting in Egypt is the only option. And surely, it would be easier (and quicker) to ship the item from Grimsby (or at least Hull or Immingham) to Port Elizabeth - the latter name rather gives that away.
I was just turning onto the 180 when this came on the radio, I assumed that it would go via a ship all the way because of the potential for disaster not to mention the cost of over landing it. I expected it either to ship out of Grimsby or Hull and figured if it was Hull then I’d see it as I can’t imagine it crossing the Humber bridge. Didn’t see it anyway, so either Grimsby or another Walt on a flight of fancy.
