I know I’ve said something on the owner operators forum
One of the few things that are busy, at this time of year, are the animal feed mills. If I were looking for work, I would get the yellow pages out and ring around the feed mills/merchants. You’ll need wellies, a Phillips navigator, broad shoulders, and often thick skin (dealing with some farmers)
But work’s work, and a quid’s a quid, in these hard times
prichardson:
Been told by Debenhams not to bother coming to work again, as there is no work; well, not until the run up till next Christmas. It’s just one of the benefits working for an agency I suppose when you don’t even get a days notice about ending your employment on what should have been a permanent placement.Anywhere south of Bristol seems to be dead for work. Is there anywhere in the UK that still has job adverts out there for drivers? I’ve always been of the impression that places such as Northampton, MK & Swindon have had pretty high employment rates, but since the recession, and going in to the post-New Year period which is quiet anyway, I’m not at all sure.
If work won’t come to me down here, then I’ll pick up an old van, stick a matress in the back and live away through the working week if needed. I’ve done it before and whilst it’s hardly a good way to live, at least you can earn a wage. I don’t have a clue where to start looking, so any suggestions would be hugely appreciated…
I know from reading this board that plenty of people are in this position. It’s a real bugger when it happens to you though, as the reality of no money coming in hits home pretty darn hard. The South West isn’t great for work at the best of times, so I think a move is the only option, be it for lorry work or anything else.
Thanks,
Paul
you have my full understanding and sympathys, having nearly ended up in that position myself this year.like you say, with nearly everywhere in a “stagnante” state at the moment,it is very difficult to get sorted out with what is your preferred state of employment.
Thanks for your replies everyone.
Kind of frustrating waiting to places to re-open to get out find some work, but hopefully I’ll find something.
What’s really hacked me off is that the last two jobs I have had, have been the only jobs that I could honestly say I enjoyed and could have spent years with them, only to have been laid off by both!
Yes the Debenhams job was through agency, but was agreed that it would become full time after the new year when the employer took me on from the agency.
I’ll be getting in touch with DHL as they govern the Spectrum Debenhams supply chain that I’ve been working for. Same lorries, rules and everything, so hoping the experience may go some way to get my name on a list at least.
Never felt so low, depressed, down and kind of deflated as I do at the moment. I sound like a bloody girl but it’s a hell of a let down. Ironically we moved in to a bigger house (rented) a few months ago as wages were good and future was bright.
Thanks everyone,
Paul.
hiya ,
a bit off the subject here but i remember an ad in one of the lancashire papers many years ago it was a standing ad for coach drivers the firm i believe was from chorley, can’t remember the exact wording but read something like coach drivers required must be able to use a shovel the ad appeared week in week out from me being a young lad to becomeing a driver the firm also had a coal round bet they didn’t get much of a queue, thanks harry long retired.
We seem to be busy on the Isle of Grain and all of the bigger boys have still got HGVs wanted signs up.
not felixstowe this place has no jobs at all

Do you mean peAnuts?
Hard luck mate…know how you feel…was laid off on New Years Day…gutted.
But having done the rounds here in the south east and Kent areas i got a call this morning offering me a job so i am happy.
Anyways here’s a brief rundown of some possibilities:
Had interview with Maritime on Isle of Grain, said they were looking for drivers, not heard back from them yet.
Spoke to RW Simpson at Paddock Wood, said they were after drivers, never got back to me.
Spoke to Continental Express at Waltham Cross, said they were interviewing, never got back to me.
Had interview with Staplehurst Transits near Maidstone, said they would have something for me in a couple of weeks (markets)
There are jobs out there, just gotta keep plugging away, disheartening i know, must have asked the same question over a hundred times.
So if you are prepared to travel (campervan) at least you are more flexible than some who don’t have that option.
Good luck with your search
Best place is UKraine
Nothing happening in the Oxford area apart from firms going bust and job losses. It seems better up North.
