Where's he gone?

It’s a number of months since I last did a run to Exeter, and you know how it is on any run, you get used to seeing the same familiar sights on a particular stretch of road.
For me, once I get south of Bristol, there are several sights to remind me of how far I’ve got to go before tipping.
Yesterday I was surprised to see, or not to see, Humphrey the camel was not in his usual corner of the field on the n/b side, or even the baby that is with him. I saw a prog on the box some time ago about Humphrey and apparently he does do guest appearances at local village shows so perhaps he was putting himself about.
Just a mile n/b from there is the Wicker Man, used to be in a field, but on one side the new Morrison’s is close to him, and if they build any more houses on the other side he’ll finish up in someone’s back garden!
A bit further south, just before J24 there used to be a T Rex on the n/b side looking though the trees, then it was moved to about a mile south of J24 on the s/b side leering over a fence at passing vehicles. The last time I remember seeing anything there was over a year ago and all I saw was a pair of feet in the air, now? nothing to be seen. Perhaps T Rex has become extinct!

Dunno, but he’s been gone for a while
I was down that way myself last year, and kept my eyes open, but he’d definitely gone :frowning:

I go that way every night and I don’t take a blind bit of notice, mind its dark at night you know

The T-rex was destroyed inthe high winds :frowning:

The running man (or what ever he’s called) needs to be restored again but not sure if they are going to bother, now that you can hardly see it.

The two camels are currently sat in the yard of a near by house, you can just see them from the motorway, I was hoping they were going to be restored but they’ve been gone for a good 12 months now so who knows. They used to have a website but don’t know if its still up.

I googled and found many websites for Humphrey, this is only two of them:

That’s in the Landrover place. Keep meaning to go in there and have a mooch.

I drove past the wickerman last year on my way to Devon on holiday, I couldn’t believe how much they’ve boxed him in, I found myself saying to my daughter “I remember this when it was all fields”

The wicker man is a landmark well known to my 16 yr old daughter and reminds her of holidays or weekends away and she knew when she spotted it we were well on our way.

Walked up to look at that wrecker on several occasions when we used to stay at Langdons Truckstop years ago. It used to stand on the roadside by the gate and belonged to the scrapyard that was in there before the Landrover place. It is, I believe, a Leyland Martian (ex army).

Humphrey wasn’t there when i last passed at Easter last year

Yes it’s an ex WD Leyland Martian heavy recovery truck, used to have them in our REME detachment when I was in, took over from the old Scammells.
Originally fitted with a Rolls Royce straight eight petrol engine.

thought it was a Leyland, wasnt too sure which model though

I always imagined it was a scamel, the one that’s been in the field since the 80s, I think. As for Humphrey, I presume he didn’t actually have 3 humps but hope he may reappear in the future. Of course if his owners have moved… Nice to see such things for the kiddies to look out for.

Is the truck in the chicken field before Fagins a Scammell?

Dunno where he went, but he’s back!
