At the moment after fuel and other expenses the outcome is roughly the same as before, when working on hourly rate, just now have much more trouble and risk (also had to take a loan to buy a truck), so life has not improved for sure since I’ve started to work on my own several months before:-). I’ve expected at least something around 2500 pounds a week which would make it worth (needless to say hoped for more ), so it definitely isn’t worth to continue if staying on the same level, that is why trying to find something better and will use advice where to subcontract for better. Have tried to go on my own for couple weeks but it’s easier to say than to do, so meanwhile decided to go as subbie for some company which pays fast, as it will take some year or two to make safe amount of savings.
My truck has ADR FL (I don’t have qualification for ADR, but can fix it:-) ), so I have an idea maybe it would be paid better being subcontracted by company which uses subbies for ADR transportation. Can go outside UK as well, overnights ain’t a problem for me if returning home to make 45h. Just don’t want to mess with procedures while not being sure it’s worth to do, therefore would be great to speak with a company who could subcontract me for all year round to go with ADR - if you have some ideas where it’s worth of trying would appreciate.

Wind + P1$$ comes to mind I`m afraid
You need to start at the bottom, and work your way up to where you want to be, preferably with a very quick payer…
You will need to work ■■■■ hard to get anywhere near £2500 a week, from where you are ATM, and, keep an eye on your mileage/fuel…busy fools soon become busted flushes
I’d be surprised if there are any owner drivers out there who are earning enough for it to be worth their while.
Most of the ones I’ve met in the past, don’t earn much more than I do as an employee.
Let’s face it, road transport companies charge their customers ■■■■ all for the cost of delivery. They make their money from high volume, such as Eddie Stobbart, DHL extra.
The tin pot firms trade on borrowed time, whilst keeping their fingers crossed that they don’t loose the only contract they’ve got, which keeps them afloat.
Stanley Mitchell:
It isn’t just about the actual take home pay, being your own boss means you have the ability to offset plenty of costs attributable to everyday life
I know a fair few ODs doing very well, its horses for courses and you really do need the work ethic gene
How well are they doing, exactly? Are these owner drivers with just 1 truck?
Tell me exactly what their turnover is and net profit?

2s & 3s mostly, and NO, I won`t tell you F.A. on here
So it’s something stupid, like £3000 turnover and £600 profit, no doubt. Anyone who knows anything about HGV’s, will appreciate how expensive the running costs and maintenance are on these things, which is incurred by the owner.

20% Net…I think ESL/DHL ect would be more than happy with that
To make the OD game work, you need business brains, and have NO cravings for murals, Spot lights, 700BHP or poncing around truckstops [IMO]…
Each to their own, but if you are doing those figures with three trucks, that`s a nice £90k less C.T., not bad

We are talking Net aren’t we ?
I don’t believe any OD with 1 vehicle is making that in net profit. Turnover, yes, but that’s probably with 2% profit lol

Even, if you could earn £600 profit out of £3,000 turnover, how can that possibly be worth the hassle of running your own truck and the business itself. It’s paltry! You don’t know what work you can get from one day or week to the next.

There really are some very negative posters on this forum .
One good reason to be an owner driver , not to have to work with someone like you
Kenny Ferguson seems to manage, onto his 3rd unit with Al the shiny bits etc, know of a few others who manage to do well. Did Simon Gibson not start out as an O/D? People can and do make it work. Others will fail, it’s the same in any game.
