where to start

I am looking to get back truck driving again. I stopped driving hgv 1 in 2009 after 18 years.
I did have a digi card but has now expired.
would I have to sit a cpc and if so would I have x amount of time to complete this after starting or do I have to complete the cpc before starting work.

just don’t know where to start or even if it would be worth my while with all the costs
any help would be great

Digi cards can be easily be applied for and unless it was confiscated it’s just £19 to renew.

If you haven’t done your DCPC yet then you would need to do the five days required but don’t worry there’s no exam and is just a matter of turning up (total waste of time IMO as you can still sit the same day 5 times :unamused: ).
Not sure about the price, others here will put you right, I would say somewhere over the £400 mark?
If your looking to get back into trucking a lot of companies now pay for you to do the DCPC as long as you stay with them for a set amount of time, normally a year so there’s an option.
How old (if you don’t Mind me asking) are you as you may need a medical if your 45 and every 5 years after that.

I’m afraid you would have to complete 35 hours DCPC periodic training before you could legally drive commercially, as most lorries are now fitted with digital tachographs you would most likely also need a new driver card.

thanks for the info
I am due my medical in feb next year that’s what has got me thinking about driving again .

Always worth keeping up to date. You worked hard for it so keep it. That was my thinking. I stopped trucking some years back, I’m only 46 so like you it was the medical that gave me a kick. I now do class 1 work on my days off and in the next two years (when I can get hold of my pension from my current job) I will be going back to it as dare I say it, I like it  .

yep i didn’t think the cpc would be so expensive
medical £100
digi card £19
cpc £400
plus a week off work
this is going to be expensive

Shop around and you should be able to do the medical for £40 to £50.

The Cheap Medicals thread may help.

Also if you shop around you may find DCPC courses for around £50 to £70 per 7 hour course.

I don’t know where you are but there is a chap in Widnes who I went to Charged £45, Saturdays, and that included the upload fee and a bacon butty at half time. Don’t know his prices now but I can check if you are in the north west

There is one medical site on the net (google driver medicals) that I intend going to early next year advertising medicals for £40 inc the eye test.

Star by asking your GP mine was only £45 and I did not need to do a 200 mile round trip to see the so called cheap one in Exeter who was also £45
