I’d be looking for some self-employed HGV drivers to help cover some jobs (mostly West Thurrock to Tilbury, London Gateway and Felixstowe). Where a good place to start looking? Tried a couple of agencies but I’m less than satisfied with them. Thanks
POLAND ROMANIA LITHUANIA BULGARIA etc etc all willing self employed and sending all monies back too native lands and paying ■■■■ ALL TAX due too their bent accountants

Things not going to good for you bud ? First you’re messed about by hauliers, then you get your own truck, and now agencies are not satisfying you ? In what way where you not satisfied with the agencies ?

Would a SE Driver not be cheaper than an agency, ie no taxes no admin fees. just pay the driver say 175 quid job done on a as u need basis.

A decent self employed driver would be charging a rate similar to the agency. The self employed driver has to pay tax and may be VAT registered so where do you get the idea there’s no taxes?

Thats barely the same as £10/hr PAYE for a 15hr shift which it could quite easily end up being given the destinations listed.

are there that many S/E drivers out there? I mean non agency ones? just thinking with typical haulier payment terms how do they manage it?
All the customers I work with agree payment terms upfront. None of them so far have asked for 90 days. Quite a few I can just invoice up to when I fancy, call in for a cuppa and they’ll write a cheque or do a bank transfer. I’d assume maybe the bigger players would operate those terms but to be honest in my experience thus far I’m doing well for the small to medium sized haulier and it seems a lot less hassle too!
not to bad, just know from when we ran our vehicles most were 60-90 days terms which seemed to be pretty much standard practice (a rubbish one may I add).
sound like the littler guys have a bit of common decency about them, which to me is how it should be none of this waiting months for you money.
To be honest I was worried about the whole 90 days thing but it does seem with the smaller to medium sized operators they know what it’s like to have to wait for payment so they don’t mess you about, one I work for he was stuck for a driver and he was in the truck himself about 20 mins up the road from base. I said I could do it, took my car to swap over with him and when I got back my car was brimmed full of diesel as a thankyou. I was looking to get in with the bigger companies when I first started up but as it goes I’m more than happy at the mo.

You could post on the ‘Driver Vacancies’ forum on this site.
I’m self-employed (work direct for my own customers) and would have been interested but I’m in another part of the country so can’t.
Ask about when you are on the road, you may be surprised at the amount of self-employed drivers that are out there !!
