Where have all the flies gone

Back in the early seventies the speed of the trucks I was driving went up from 35-40mph to 65-70mph and a problem on a warm sunny day was the windscreen getting plastered with splattered bugs and flies. Even the mirror arms had a line of them. It was a hard job trying to wash them off but if you did not try and it rained it was nearly impossible to see out the screen when they were spread all over it.
I only drive a car now but can go hundreds of miles without any dead bugs on the screen so what have all you new boys done with them. Bring em back.

On my car it is the number plate that gets splattered. When out riding my motorbike I still have the occasionally wasp in my crash helmet, hopefully killed by the impact so it doesn’t move around in there.

I noticed my truck looks only like a bugs graveyard during the hot weather. Not had much in the way of hot weather this year (in Scotland anyway) so might explain the lack of squished bugs.

Insects like “Yellow”. If the numberplate is yellow, then it makes sense for more than a par number of bugs to go SPLAT on that part of a car, rather than the other bits.

The real “mess on the windscreen” splats comes from Moths & large bumblebees that leave that big dollop of mayonnaise everywhere. :smiling_imp:

Maybe the windscreens are more raked nowadays so the flies are deflected away with the airstream.Q what goes through a flies head when it hits your screen.A its bum.

STill plenty round our ways , this hit my screen last week and nearly came through it !!!

I never realised that’s where Helman’s got their product from, Herds of Bugs, queuing patiently every morning to be milked. Cool. [emoji219][emoji221][emoji230]

Nice theory … but unless you’re driving backwards I don’t think there will be be many bugs on the yellow numberplate!

■■■■■■■ hell it’s a wonder it didn’t write your truck off! :open_mouth:

Seem to collect a few big helpings of green gunk in the hot weather but the rest of the time barely anything.

Hate it when you splat a big bee or a wasp and all the gunk is over the window and it acts like a magnet to all other wasps to come and feed off the remains or it looks that way.

Don’t waste it that will do as sauce for the road kill

It’s all about the weather and speeds.Summers here now are more like winter with the central heating on in July so the bugs probably think it’s February. :open_mouth: :unamused:  While as always even when they are there the amounts of splattered bugs usually reflects the amount of speed and 50-55 mph max isn’t exactly quick. :bulb:

Just as many bugs as ever, you just don’t get so many splattered on cars because of their sharply raked screens

global warming, probably drowned in the blazing sunshine wot we aint got.

Anyone notice those large bees hit the winscreen with a loud snap?

It’s worse when you have the window down and you feel a hard thud hit you in the chest, look down and see the largest bee or wasp laid out concussed with stars spinning around its head down by your lap your on the motorway and your just waiting for the moment it sorts itself out and decides to shove its arse end into you
