Where have all our manners gone?

And I do mean our manners, us truckers!
I accept car drivers bad manners, bad driving etc, but I expect better between ourselves.
And (and don’t even start about beginning a sentence with ‘and’, it is perfectly acceptable and grammatically correct) how come I didn’t get the memo about ‘sod’em all Thursday’ (night)
I always flash drivers in (maybe 50% of drivers flashed me in)
I always say thank you when they do flash me in (maybe 40% of drivers thanked me)
And by the law of averages, that must mean some of you are guilty of bad, or no manners!
I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed! (As my mother used to say haha)
Can we not just be a little nicer to each other? Cos let’s face it, no bugger else is!

It seems nowadays that to show courtesy to someone is a sign of weakness. I usually flash drivers in, unless flashing could cause confusion for example as we pass a slip road or I simply forget, but i there seems to be a growing number of drivers who can’t be bothered to say “thanks”. As an observation, certain companies (stobrats) rarely flash or thank, maybe it’s a company directive, foreign plated lorries nearly always do.

As for starting a sentence with “and”, it’s a coordinating rather than subordinating conjunction, and as such is typically used to link elements of equal status within a sentence. However, there is no grammatical reason NOT to start a sentence with “and”, in fact, it can be useful to do so in creating a forceful effect.

Edit:

Do you realise how much FUN I am at parties!!!

To be fair if you’re running at night then it is fairly easy to see if someone flashes you in but during daylight hours especially on a bright day then unless you are looking in your mirror at exactly the right moment then it can be quite easy to miss someone flashing you in. Personally I work on the assumption that if I didn’t see someone flash me in it is because I wasn’t looking at the right time and always give a curtious left, right, left flash of the indicators as a Thank you anyway. I also like to think that if some one doesn’t thank me for flashing them in then it is simply because they didn’t see me do it.
Non of the above of course applies to Toscos drivers as I’m beginning to think that it is against Tesco company policy to flash other drivers in.

Stobarts don’t even flash to acknowledge each other out on the road so not much chance of them flashing you back in, or dancing the indicators to say thanks.

The ultimate disappointment is flashing a colleague in and them not flashing you back. Scum

The worst interaction I had with a colleague was a few years back. We were between 2 islands and I was on inside lane. There’s usually a car or 2 parked half way down the road meaning you have to get over. We exited the preceding island and he floored it alongside me knowing I’d have to yield and let him past once we get to the cars. Except there were no cars there. I was in a truck without telematics so I thought, let’s see how desperate he is to get past and I floored it as well. I went up to just past the speed limit and let him go as the next island was just down the road. The outside lane is then right turn only so I could’ve hung him out to dry like he tried with me but that would make me as big of a turd as he is. I bet his brakes were glowing when he got to that island

Not long after we both arrived at the base and I pulled alongside him at the next security gate. I was assigned a bay quicker than him and promptly overtook him driving back into the yard. I didn’t look over to see who it was. I hate enough people as it is without adding to my list :unamused:

Having got fed up of flashing every driver in, with 30-40% thanking you, I only do it now when its a SLOW overtake, and im comfortable with them moving in. I drive nights, so whilst its daylight and the guy is overtaking me with ease i dont bother flashing in. When its night time, and its only 1 person overtaking you every 10 mins or so, i always flash in and they ALWAYS thank…but thats night drivers for you

edit: well apart from tipper drivers, they rarely thank!

I try to flash everyone in… BUT 70% of the time drivers will pull in before I feel like they are at an acceptable distance. There should be a sign for “[zb] off you are too close”

I have started to spoil my impeccable manners of acknowledging being flashed in recently.

It seems that a complete inability to allow me past other drivers has taken hold :frowning: Basically it is usually only Irish and Scots that come past me (our trucks have ’ generous ’ limiters), but there seems to be an increasingly pathological determination for the 55 mph crew who will not simply knock back their cruise 2 mph for 10 seconds.

If you are not courteous and professional enough to help me past, don’t expect a thankyou from me for flashing me in after a 2 mile overtake. Knobs :imp:

Yeh, most crap driving I just put up with, tut and shake my head, but this just brings out the worst in me and I just want to commit murder, it’s my one and only road rage trigger.
As irrational as it may sound, I’m praying they pull in to the next msa so I can tell them what an absolute see you next tuesday they are and how I want to rip their thick ■■■■ heads off. :smiling_imp: …(maybe as well they don’t I keep forgetting I am not 25 anymore. )

As for not getting a ‘thank you’ for a flash …don’t really give a flying one tbh.

Tipper drivers are [zb] always cutting in no indicating no nothing… then they speed up when you go to overtake them like they’ve magically just lost a [zb] ton of weight all a sudden…

I didn’t mean to come across as if I went home & cried about it, it just seemed to come to a head on Thursday night. Yes, night, so no excuses of not seeing the flash.
If someone entered a shop before you and held the door open for you, wouldn’t you say thank you? Same thing!
I also hate when people pull in almost taking your wipers off with them, just so inconsiderate.
Plus the whole not dropping back for 2 seconds to let an obviously faster truck than you pass.
Oh and cavey … :unamused: Yawwwwwwn.
I just think it’s such a shame we can’t at least acknowledge and respect each other

It is helpful to be flashed in after a slow overtake, and I make sure to thank the driver for it. I’ve noticed Argos, Asda, Tesco and Howdens drivers are suuuper unlikely to help you out in the slightest. They must be too busy enjoying the gigantic benefits of own account employment to be courteous

I hit a low point in the middle of last week after the M25 did a good impression of a car park. I was chronically over 15hrs by the time I got to park up, it was dark and ■■■■■■■ with rain. It was tight, and I just didn’t have the skills to back into the one space available and when I asked the driver behind for help watching me in, he said “No chance mate, if you can’t get it in, I’m having it.” :imp: I just couldn’t make it work and had to drive on and do a dodgy parking job in half a layby.

If a driver is making good progress past me then I won’t knock off the CC but if he’s struggling and taking forever and I can see a string of traffic building up, I drop it down 3 clicks and let him past to ease the flow of traffic.

One thing I have noticed is that Martime drivers are less and less likely to flash you in. If its a tramper though in a big cab, they flash more than the shift drivers. It must be because they go so slow and feel that you’ll be so far past them its not worth flashing.

That would have annoyed me, and determined to the point where I would have made bloody sure I did get in that space, no matter how long it took just to ■■■■ that bloke off…just keep getting out to check mate as many times as it takes, also he would soon get sick of waiting anyway.
You were as you said already ‘‘chronically over a 15’’ so what would another 5 to 10 mins make, (with an explanation printout) anyway ?

+1. And waved at the other knob with a big grin on my face as he [zb] off into the distance.

What a ■■■■■■. . I was at a produce growers and needed to turn round to be facing right way for a bay. Went down the bottom and curtainside unloading blocking a big area so couldn’t back. It was a few mins between the forks arriving after each pallet. Asked him politely if he’d back up for a second and just said an real arsy “no” Weapons grade knuckle dragging ■■■■■■. I have driven 52mph vehicles for years and I stopped flashing in all but those that are struggling ages ago, it gets tiresome. Personally I don’t see why people get so worked up about it, if you have a 4mph advantage why do you need flashing in? It’s a custom from the days of crap rattling mirrors, these days it’s pointless.

I did try again to get it in, but I couldn’t seem to make it work. I wasn’t worried about being even more over the 15hrs in explanation terms, I was just really tired so that wasn’t helping me. I’m not used to making big things fit into tight spaces
