when are the stupid government going to allow truck drivers to do their job properly? and become real professionals
When I first drove a truck in 1964, there where no H&S rules, no tachos, and no VOSA.
We had to sheet and rope our loads with no proper training except what we where shown by older drivers, and even though we were only kids ourselves we had respect for our trucks, because they were a means to make a living and not showpieces like today’s trucks As trucks changed we evolved with them .In 1969 the government decided in their wisdom to make Truck driving a profession,
My suggestion would be anyone wanting to come in to the game now should serve an apprenticeship for 5 years with a fully qualified driver with at least 10 years experience behind him. This would enable the truck to do a full days work, Parking up would be at the drivers discretion, when he had tipped or loaded without worrying if he had run 10 minutes over his time or not.
By all means keep VOSA for checks on the condition of vehicles, but they would be better employed making sure that drivers parked up for the night where safe from ■■■■■’s and eastern european load thieves. Im’e bloody glad im’e out of it now.
Maybe if you stopped voting for stupid government we’d get somewhere?

I honestly dont think voting this lot out and another load of dipsticks in will make any difference,
Before the job became a profession, drivers WHERE professional, they didn’t need anyone to tell them when to stop, where to park, how long to have off,How long to drive before a break, we knew instinctively when to do these things. there where no timed deliveries, and there where far less accidents involving HGV’s.
Todays laws are purely cash generators, not to help save lives on the roads ,but to swell the coffers of the government.
