Eventually. It was dying long before the Chinese got big in steel, from a combination of bad management, union intransigence, lack of investment in infrastructure, high overheads and market forces. But of course if you can’t blame the Chinese you’ll just blame Thatcher ; it’s really that simple isn’t it?

the nodding donkey:
Even Eastern European rate cutting scum can’t compete with container ships.

Road will be finished about the time when Romanians / Bulgarians will have evolved up into Polish rate.

EU spreading will be geogaphically limited.

So next downgrade will be - Chinese trucks with Chinese truckers flooding into EU through the new built road

There was a post sometime ago about a rail link to move containers between China and Europe, and somebody was against that and said it would be better to move it by road and it would be more efficient than ships if he could do it with some form of road train.

However now he’s against the road because the wrong (or wong) people are building it.

The latest mega big container ships can carry up to 18000 teu’s. That’s a lot of lorries trundling along the roads.

18000 - thats a LOT Chinese truckers on European roads.
1 week drive here
2 weeks work in EU
1 week drive home

Ralph Davies used to run to Kazakhstan and as far as the Chinese border, some loads were for the Embassies, such as computers and corporate movement.
Peter Gilder and Sons also ran there trading as Russanglia Ltd .
Their trucks got a good battering on dirt and mud roads, and law suits followed to the truck manufacturers.
I saw the photos of their adventures on the wall at the Shell garage near Le Mans ,known as Eigors after the big hairy dog that lived there and tales of hiring a guard with an AK 47 to ■■■■■■ you through bandit country, and getting Legionaires disease from stale shower water in Russian hotels and truckstops.

let’s be realistic here: Ningbo to Antwerp is 5700 miles on a plane, probably close to 8000 miles with a truck. a 40-foot container costs around a thousand US-dollars to ship from Ningbo to Antwerp on a containership. And there aren’t many backloads either.

About the same number of empty boxes though

I was just trying to be sarcastic about next level after Romanians / Bulgarians…
