About 15 years ago, A30 near Okehampton.
They didn’t look at my tacho but a had a real going over my trailer. Had a slight issue with tread depth on one tyre, asked when I expected to get back to base (East Mids) and gave a delayed PG9 of 24 hours to get tyre sorted.
They were sound blokes just doing their job.
1991 Hoo farm in Kidderminster, no lense on the trl foglight , I was on traction out of Ramsgate, tbf it was summer no fines for trivial stuff back then. Guilty.
2007 Sandbach services Maxi haulage trl on, pulled it out of Birkenhead to load at Dav 1 for N.I.
No issues .
2012 on for Ray White somewhere near Romans South of France €90 euro fine for not giving way.
Guilty.
That’s it in 34 years regarding the ministry.
4 x Speeding Sp10 .
One careless driving 6 points £170 fine guilty.
I have been extremely fortunate.

I’m inclined to agree, and I for one would not voluntarily be pointing out braking system defects in case it led to 3 points on my licence

So what would that be in Conor’s example exactly?
Irony, Poetic justice., or both ?
Started driving HGV in 1975. Most recent check was in 1980 when I got pulled over for full check They were underneath with pry bar looking for slack in suspension and steering. Truck was a brand new W reg Mercedes 1617 first week out. Left me alone since then though.
In the 80s I had a running battle with one particular individual who pulled me in every time he saw me over around a year or so.My own vehicle but only ever continental work which he thought suspicious. He pulled me off the A34 near Abingdon and insisted i follow him and his pals to Bicester MoT centre.I know it was a bit far but I acquiesced. My outfit had a full test and at the final brake test the cab was outside the building. He had left the speaker on and I heard him almost in tears bleating that there must be something he could do me for.The only fault was a chafed hand brake cable.I had already bought a few feet of new cable to repair it at a quiet moment and I insisted on doing the job on the spot not wanting to threaten the public with a dangerous vehicle and all.Still they all got some overtime out of it.
Awkward sod? Moi?
My route from Dover to Holyhead used to be hilariously convoluted thanks to avoiding VOSA checkpoints. Partly why I’ve only ever been parked up rather than fined despite most of my career being at Irish and Dutch companies that were on the VOSA stop on sight list

Never got stopped when I drove for Tilcon, however when our TM bought some of their trucks I was stopped a few times. Later I drove for a local haulier and got pulled a few times (once on the hard shoulder of the southbound M1 between gates 36 and 37 and the chap actually inspected the truck there! ). The last time was at Whaley Bridge in 2002, I had a loose front spring bolt so got a GV9 deferred by one hour to let me get back to our garage at Wirksworth. The truck then had to have a full MOT afterwards of course.
Pete.
Twice around 2005/6, nothing since.
Pulled over for check weighing at Risby (Bury St Eds) and pulled in for checkover by mobile wheeltappers on the A46 layby just past the army base nr Tewkesbury, busy road that and the layby is narrow, not seen them there for years.
All clear both times despite having an 18hour shift tacho card from a previous week (Risby), due entirely to a blow out on the M11 with an odd sized tyre which took the fitter hours to find one driving over half east anglia.
Sept last year was the first time in alot of years…
Got dragged into the checkpoint at junc 18 M4 with a damaged 40HC box on a stretched semi-loader, vosa man wanted to do me for being overlength etc etc, it all got sorted eventually but he did take a picture to show his friends as he’d never seen 1 before [emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787]

I did get check weighed twice, once on the plate below gate 3 of the M5 when I drove for Tilcon and they found me 3 cwt over on the 3rd axle of an eight wheeler. I explained that it was tarmac and had settled in transit and they let me off as I was tipping at Halesowen locally. Second time was on a six wheeler and was weighed at Bingham and found to be almost half a tonne over on a 26 tonner. The chap said “you must have filled up with fuel after loading” and winked, I agreed with him. He said that the european artic in front of me was almost four tonnes overweight so he wasn’t bothered about my bit. I then went over to the wheeltappers, the guy remarked about the amount of oil under the ■■■■■■■ engine L10 and I told him it was sweat and if he had dragged 26 tonne over the peaks from Stoney Middleton on a hot day he would be glowing as well! He let me go.
Pete.
VOSA (as it was at the time) pulled me over in Jedburgh autumn 2008 (remember it cos I’d just changed jobs) a few months earlier, prior to that would’ve been mid 90’s.
Since then twice by the MPCVU but the last time by them was around 2016ish
I have been stopped once on the A602, random stop for a weight check around 2010. They saw the name on the front of the lorry and flagged me down as I approached figuring I had a full load of fencing. They implied that our lorries were often overweight and had previously done people for it. Laughed when they realised I had around 2 tonne on the back and sent me on my way after checking my tacho. Never been stopped before that or since.

1997 on the A14 an inexperienced driver decided to not to give way joining from a slip road in a Triumph Dolomite not the Sprint version unfortunately.
I had a choice hit him from behind while looking at his kids faces in the back window or lane 2 .
Lane 2 it was, I clipped the front wing of a Vx Astra who then rubbed along along the crash barrier.
No injuries no sign of the Dolomite which carried on regardless.
Kettering magistrates who decided 6 points and £170 was punishment enough.
So did I.
Rather a day out in the magistrates than a coroners inquest.
It was a Sunday so the road was busy with civilians.
The guy in the Astra was sound even though he didn’t see what had happened in front of me.
Today of course I would be exonerated through the all seeing dash cam.
Be careful you might just get caught up in somebody else’s poor driving.
Last October; at Coldra, Newport to check my ADR kit. Occupational hazard if you’re showing orange plates.
All in order, their gaffer was with them so they were on their best behaviour; even managed to get the best of a bit of friendly banter.
It being near Armistice Day, I’d got me poppy on the front grille. The guy in the car who’d pulled me in asked me if I was ex-Forces, to which I replied yes, REME.
He was ex RCT so of course tried (in a friendly way) to get one over on me, as you’d expect. I asked if that was why they made him drive the car instead of checking the wheelnuts; cue laughter from the others.
Didn’t find them bad at all, but then again I was 100% in the clear and our firm’s in the green anyway; another bloke who’d been caught with no wheel chocks and an out of date extinguisher wasn’t looking so cheerful though.
So a note to ADR newbies; keep tabs on your kit, you’re far more likely to get a spot pull than most.

Thank you for…
That. You got dealt a pretty crappy hand there. Yeh, a dash-cam may well have exonerated you.

When I lived in Belgium one of our English drivers had an ADR check. One of his fire extinguisher boxes was found to be full of stumpy bottles of Primus beer.Manager’s comment was “That’s a bit out of order.”
