When the rear lift axle was king

I once worked for a firm in Leicester and had a H reg Leyland Daf FTS95.400Ati tag. After the Daf, I got a P reg Scannie 113 Streamline tag. Both of which were used on fridge work. Sadly, I have no pics, although I did see both last year still in use for other firms.

Cheers

Andy

Three of the best. well, two and a bit!

Chaos & Bullsh*t Squadron!

My mate “Dodgy’s”.

That 88 hasn’t always been a 6x2.

My present motor is a tag axle  .

Took a bit of getting used to after driving midlifts for years.

Only other tag i had driven was an ex W H Malcolm Foden 4000 (very short chassis and tended to go where it wanted , not where you wanted it to go).

After having this one for a couple of years i would take it bad going back onto a midlift again (turning and traction are second to none).

Can be a bit swingy when empty , but you get used to it after a while

Hi Boys wouldnt have anything else TAGS are the best

This snow we’ve just had highlights the tags rule big time!!! the amount of times i’ve had to use my diff lock this week in our yard to get about is a joke, although it was funny to got stuck on the A41 on friday morning in traffic!!! had to rely on the diff lock to just about get me moving!!! :grimacing: :unamused:

Yup, LWC were indeed part of TDG.

They were latterly in a yard just off Derby Road at Sandhills - not a million miles away from Lightbody Strasse (& we know who was there, don’t we?)

Pete the Jeep could confirm this, but I’m sure the yard used to belong to George Davis - it backed onto the Southport - Hunts Cross railway line.

yes indeed!! I had 10 “happy” months based in Lightbody Strasse in1987/8.

I remember now, we used to load from LWC at Tyldesley too - they used to store for the erstwhile Lucozade factory at Little Hulton. I think the Tyldesley site became TDG Harris, and then possibly TDG Beck & Pollitzer as they went through the branding merry-go-round

my dad used to park his trucks in lightbody street in the mid 80’s in hales yard … but they were’nt tags :frowning: :frowning:

My old man had an R113m 320 on a G plate (G898 WBJ) with a tag axle but it wasn’t air operated. I think it was electric/hydraulic if i remember rightly. I can remeber it not working properly ona few occassions due to loss of fluid. I’d choose a tag over a mid lift anyday, a much better workhorse!

I always thought the electric lift went out with the 2 series.I preferred the electric ones because they would lift at any weight and you could put on a super single if you had used your unit’s spare, and the 3 series with air had the wheel on like a steer instead of like a drive. I once drove from below Paris to Calais with the tag up because I would have been weekended in France if I had changed a punctured tag tyre but it was a pretty hairy experience. :unamused:

the latest i see on a tractor unit was a K reg 3 series, whilst working at scania there was a new 4 series 6x2 rigid hook loader for the fire service that had a hydraulic tag, you didnt have to keep your finger on the button to raise it as it was on a timer but atill had the same spring and ram set up.

dad,s scania 113m 360 is a g reg 1989 and has got a hydraulic and electric tag axle.

had a b reg f12 about 5 years ago n i was a lovely drive/ride great for turning and traction
