j plate was the first reg to have the gr900 (4 over 4) and the grs900 (3 over 3 with the splitter) as with any changes there’s a overlap period the splitter box was common on j onwards top spec motors where as the 4 over 4 didnt really take off till the L reg most b4 that had the 10 speed gr801.

Hi all, 6x2 Tag axle always looks the best and is better for a tight spot, here’s a couple.Paul

Hi All
The rear lift still is king wouldnt have a twin steer or center lift nice for motorways no good for real work

Hi Lads,
I have to agree with tribsa  That lift axle has got me out of the ■■■■ many a time…Here’s one or two pics of my old trucks…

I remember driving through France one day empty with the rear axle up.
And being stopped by the old bill over there…And he said you have a problem?
You should have seen me trying to explain that I was empty and it was for when I was loaded and carrying my maximum weigh. :unamused:
In the end I just showed him all my paper work and took off left him scratch
his head!!!

One from 1975 at Zahedan near the borders of Iran / Pakistan and Afghanistan with my f88 EMF 521J which had previously starred in the film ‘Alfie darling’ with Joan Collins and Alan Price. It really helped the snowchains last longer during winter as lifting the axle a bit made the drive tyres spread out big time

I’ll post a couple on here when i get chance to scan them…

All the best wagsie/

Just had a look at that mate, didnt take alot out of that chassis did they  , not surprised you were a bit over-length! Had a few rear lifts on lowloader work, never got stuck much, they good for 70-80ton gross and you got loads of traction once the axle was up, in fact, i think we used have more trouble with double drives off road, they sometimes dig just a very big hole!!! The only time we really had a problem with the rear lift was getting on the ferry at Harwich, the tide high and the ramp steep, just as we lost traction the lift motor decided to pack-up and the axle was stuck down! had to force it up with a chain and dog, much to the amusement of the waiting drivers behind! A firm i used to work for, Heavyhaul (chelmsford) Ltd, used to run both 88s and 89s which included 2 dutch-imports, both rear-lifts, he loved 'em, ran them to death, the last one coming of the road in about 1990 (the remains of which are still dotted about the yard), he would of ran’em for longer if decent cabs could of been found! Although i’m a bit of a Brit-lover ive got a soft spot for the old Volvos, they were a good work horse.

Heres a one which was rarely seen all of our 113s& 143s were tags except for 2 both F regs Never saw many twin steer Scania at that time Here`s mine

Hi ya straight eight!
well if you think that F88 was long look at this old gal…
Used to be a tanker on a Dutch airfield.hence the day cab…

err, yeah, No problem with long-pin trailors there then!!!

Here is picture of my 143 delivering to Milan in 1990, great truck.

And one more parked at home in Winchester.

wow nice to see so many photo’s of tag axle motors, i’m gona try and fins some pix of the 2 tag F reg 3 series my dad used to drive and get scanning!!! :sunglasses:  :sunglasses:  :sunglasses:

My old man had an R113m 320 on a G plate (G898 WBJ) with a tag axle but it wasn’t air operated. I think it was electric/hydraulic if i remember rightly. I can remeber it not working properly ona few occassions due to loss of fluid. I’d choose a tag over a mid lift anyday, a much better workhorse!

143 the best lorry scania ever built. weve got a scania r500 v8 tag axle its a good lorry for the lowloader

some fantastic pictures, if i get any chance of some say in my next vehicle a tag is at the top of the list. :sunglasses:
