Spoke to a man by the name of bryan on rosslare-cherbourg boat last april. works for ballinalrad transport, said he done ME work in early eighties, had lots of stories, seemed genuine, was an english bloke with a pony tail. said he lived in germany for a few years. just wondering if any of you know anyone that done it that matches the description, also he was big into motorbikes and was a member of hells angels or something.
Maybe he was feeding me bull, but i dont think so. cant seem to rememder his second name, was married to a german he met in greece or turkey.

Cammell Wagon, run by a guy from Dagenham, down in Chequers Lane if I remember rightly, just over the level crossing (what was the name of the cafe right opposite?)

Was it Ma’s cafe?

I seem to remember one there when we were running out of London and Coastal.

Great pictures Klunk and GS. Keep them coming. I remember some of the trucks, spent time with Bob Hedley in Zeebrugge

back to the daf that was camels we had 3 all a reg the ducthman you was on about name was laine he was about 7foot and drove a renault 5 he went back to holland

Thats an interesting cab. Is that one of the original longlines? It looks a little longer than all other Scanias I have seen from that era.

Please tell me more about it.

GS… did you know any of the Essex International (chelmsford) lads on the Middle East run…ie Barry Cleaver,Malcolm Hammond…i was a drivers mate for them in 1978 and 1979 i didnt get to the Middle East only France,Spain etc…they used to carry silver bullion from Shoreditch and Chessington out to Europe and because of insurance purposes had to have 2 men in the cab…I was 18 at the time and loved the job but it only paid £15-00 a day and i used to spend most of that on the trip…i have some photos somewhere i will try and find them and post them on here …mostly 141s and 111s

Hi Blissy
No I didnt know any of them, a bit before my time.
I did my first trip to Rome in 1980, when I was 18, but didnt start proper until 84, when I passed my class 1.
You can check out some of my earlier posts, with photos from when I was on the road to Doha.

The extended 141 was built in Doha at Al Kulaifi Garage, in about 1991. It used to belong to Mark Stewart from Nottingham. Unfortunately it caught fire in Bulgaria and that was the end of it.I had my 141 rebuilt there too, and later after I rolled it over, I had my 112 refurbished there aswell.

Interesting. Any possibility of shedding some more light on the company that carried out the conversion? Any more light on the lorry itself? Was the bunk extra wide? What filled the extra space?

Forgive my many questions, but I’m really interested in this unusual lorry. I’m sorry to hear of its unfortunate demise in Bulgaria.

Many thanks.

It was built at Al Kulaifi Garage in Doha, where I had my 141 and 112 re-built, although I kept my standard cab. Here is a picture of my 141 when the work had started.

Marks 141 stretch just had a big bed in all that space, for the girls on the road no doubt!!
Heres mine when it was finished.

I had loads of hair then!!!
GS

Silly me
I just realised that I started this thread with these photos! Duhh
Its the Extra Old Rum down here in the tropics…This is how the old girl ended up.

I had 2000 Litres of cherry in the Belly-tank and about 750 on the unit plus 400 in the other running tank.
Fortunately I was whisked away by Ambulance before the Ministry got there.
All I got was a few cuts and bruises, some stitches and a hurt pride. Lucky!!

Hi Trigger, I remember Ken Corrigan,Roy Kershaw,(a.k.a. Roy the boy) and young Pete Woolfinden when they all worked for Dow Freight . Had some great times doing middle east, and commie block with all of them. Glad to hear Ken Corry is still around, he must have more miles on his clock than he had on his Fiat running down to Teheran. Ask him about the time he went over the Khyber Pass and the time he got stuck in Pakistan for two days trying to cross a river. Roy the boy and I did our first trip to gether to Baghdad about 1983/4 We spent Christmas eve at the Turkish border and New years eve at the Iraqi border. We both had stepped box vans ,as I had a full load of whiskey and Roy had a full load of Tennants beer. When we tipped in Baghdad, at a Yugoslave construction company ,they put us up for two days in a company bungalow and also gave us a houseboy to do our washing and cleaning, they also gave us two bottles of whiskey and two cartons of beer each. That was one trip I will always remember. Pete Woody started as a trailer fitter and was a very good one. I cant remember running with him very often but do remember meeting up with him when we seemed to be going in the opposite direction. He would be coming back from Turkey and I would be going to Greece or vice versa.I do remember cancelling with Pete on more than one occasion on Kavala Beach in Greece. Like I said before Trigger, they were a great bunch of guys.

Yes GS i remember black bob also Bob Hedley i had the pleasure of two trips with bob a real character liable to cause a riot at anytime Bob and i were parked outside tarmacs compound for the night just out side basra when a scud missile landed 300 metres behind us it left a 10 metre deep hole with muck scaterred for hundreds of metres.
I tried to take a photo of the hole but to bring a camera out in front of the Iraqi police would have created big problems so i took a pic of the sweet turnip sales stall which were on the roadside next to the tarmac camp which was in the date palms behind.

The picture below was also taken at Basra among the date palms

GS Did you ever meet Gerry pictured below he drove a silver white i think it was his own truck and did a lot of work for Astran as we all did another good man on the job

Another pic of java John who reccons that why Astrans trucks were yellow same as the desert the Iranians could not target them on the al kut road as it was a shorter route from Bagdhad to Basra we used the Al hillah road in the daytime because at night the Iranians would target your lights so it was safer in the day time as opposed to meeting [zb] coming towards you with no light on :open_mouth:

I worked with Gerry {Lyons} at DJ International from Peterborough. At the time he had a dark blue Volvo F12. We did a few trips together and I learnt much from him. I think he’s still living in the Wakefield area, and I last saw him driving an ASDA truck, although I did’nt have chance to talk to him. Will have to make an effort to track him down.

Excellent pics keep them going! Can anyone tell me how to put pics on here please? all my photos are online on flickr.com
