Yes they did, very much in the same fashion as the East-Europeans now.
The history repeats itself, remember when British drivers worked in Holland for peanuts undercutting the Dutch, British builders and labourers worked in Germany on the “Autobahn” undercutting the Germans.
There where offices with translators as the Brits are in general not multi lingual (neither are most Germans)

And surprisingly it won’t change, as farmers in Lincolnshire are not able to get staff (as the local unemployed don’t want the job) so will get a permit to get people from anywhere.
And on a side note, I don’t know why they want Lithuanian drivers, as they are the best paid drivers in the Baltic states, similair salary to the Danish.
And yes Polish and Lithuanian can understand each other, and most are bi-lingual with Russian as a second language.
Finland speaks Magyar not un-similair to Hungarian.

The company I used to work for here in Immingham were commonly known in the trade as Immigration Transport. They had over 100 Polish and Eastern European drivers and only 4 British. Great guys and girls but they worked for peanuts and as a result never looked after any of the kit. You get what you pay for I suppose!
Did you get your money’s worth out of any of the bunks with any of the girls?

No need for, if you see how many bridges are hit, how many vehicles recovered from weight restrictions, all by British drivers!
Also how many British drivers can read a delivery note? If you see how many turn up at the wrong place, or cannot find a addres?
This has nothing to do with needing to speak a language, I never spoke any Polish, Russian, Slavish, or Magyar, but delivered in all these countries around the World without a problem.
Delivered and loaded chemicals, food, rubbish, animal feed and all without speaking any of their lingo.
Speaking the correct language is for many drivers worse than not be able to speak at all, most drivers talk to much, and are their own worst enemies.
Years ago I worked at a chemical plant up north(Scotland) and being Multi-lingual was called to the front desk as they had somebody there they couldn’t understand, and they thought he was Dutch or German.
After speaking to the guy, I couldn’t understand him either, and said to the woman on the desk, “he is either Swedish or Danish”
When the guy put out the famous words: “Not Swedish, from Newcastle” friggin Geordie.
Couldn’t make a word, neither could anybody else there.
Yeah and once we’re finally out, the haulage lobby will go to government and say “ohh there’s a national driver shortage, we need you to put HGV driving on the list of needed professions”
Then they’ll be able to get work permits for as many Indian and Brazilian truck drivers as needed

To be fair there are no EU rules that stop non EU immigration together with the EU free movement issue.As for Brazilian drivers more like as many Asian ones as Merkel decides to let in if not free movement after Turkey’s membership is fast tracked through.IE Merkel and Juncker are not our friends on the issue of cheap labour.If they were we’d already have an EU wide immigration policy that blocks all non EU immigration and an EU wide minimum wage to remove much of the incentive for East Euro economic migration.While ruling out Turkish membership.

I know a dude got arrested in wales a while ago…usual story…drunk and incapable,breach of the peace,resisting arrest…5 plods to subdue and lift him…they were doing him at the station and decided to get a Russian interpreter to try and make some sense out of himand after a few hours interrogation it dawned on them he was from Greenock…

They won’t even have to have a licence… Just promise to do some “delivery work” once here. These multidrop jobs are hard to fill after all.
In a decade’s time - I reckon we’ll have nearly all vans and immigrant drivers in London, as there is a move to ban trucks outright, connected with a tightening of the LEZ rules. 
Have you heard the one about “anyone owning an older than 15 plate car” won’t be able to comply with LEZ in the future either?

one thing that springs to mind is when the Brits went over to Germany it didn’t last long did it before they changed the laws making it not worth the trouble any more, so is there anything wrong in the Brits wanting to stop the eu nationals coming over here ? just like the Germans did and the Dutch did with us many years ago ?
the sooner we lock the doors and send some of them packing the better, i was never what you would call a racist more of a nationalist but these days my temper is getting worse when i see more and more of them coming over here changing everything about my area and work places
i certainly will not make them feel welcome around me, and that might be wrong but they dont feel any shame at all for the damage there doing to our own people, they just think there going to make a pot of money to send back home for them to have a great standard of living compared to our own folk who have to struggle.

100% accurate and so sad but true. I agree with everything there with the add on that im quite happily old school racist and have no problem in liking what I like,and disliking what I dislike.the way it was 40 year ago is the way I am now,and if someone don’t like it then that’s their problem,
I was ploughing a bird a few years ago who had dual nationality.belfast and south african.she went abroad aged 8 and returned more or less single parent /destitute aged 40…when she went for benefits with her kid for housing and everything else,the benefits guy told her off the record.you look a very decent respectable woman so here what your going to do as he threw all her application papers into the bin…you’ve applied as a uk citizen with your british passport and as a result you will get nothing…go away…re apply next week with your south African nationality and you will get everything going…she now gets the full pudding of benefits and rents an upmarket 3 bedroom seafront house for her and her 1 kid…all paid for by benefits…says it all,but at least she was indigenous to the uk in the 1st place.

Let’s say it - people seem to be forgetting the politically incorrect thing that needs to be done is “Sort the decent legal migrants from the illegal immigrant dross”.
“Freedom of Movement” needs to be an issue that the UK cannot be budged upon during Brexit. I won’t say “Negotiations” because there can’t actually be any if you think about it.
(1) We reset our trade routes, circumventing the need to have access to the EU single market
(2) We tell the EU that as they’ve offered us NOTHING - we’ll reciprocate in abundance. “Pulling up the Drawbridge and only letting quality legal migrants in” - stands.
(3) We ignore all further offers from the EU that by this point - will be beefed up somewhat. Too little, too late. Only an offer to let us access 100% of the EU market for NO EU contributions whatsoever and ACCEPTING all our own restrictions on movement (i.e. “unconditional surrender”) will do.
The continent forgets that we were masters of the world in this nation - whilst theirs either toppled in weeks, or only won anything by beating your neighbor in a straight fight they’re never ever ready for.
That “Masters of the world” experience needs to be brought into play as we re-kindle old friendships with far-flung lands (Eg. the commonwealth states) and resurrect our trade routes that go with them.

What we can see is the referendum vote having been hijacked by remainers like May and Hammond who won’t want to implement it.
As for the working man not benefitting from Brexit exactly how will the lifting of cabotage restrictions and free movement with Turkey be of any benefit to drivers.Bearing in mind it’s obviously your remain lot who are all about the free movement of cheap East Euro labour soon to be added to by Asian in the case of Turkish membership.
As for a trade war do you really think that the Germans could win that or even want it.
