Greetings !
I am the son of Tom Wheale, a well known Swansea haulier operating in Swansea from the mid 1930s to his untimely death in 1969. The firm started in quarrying and stone haulage in the 1920s. Tom and his bother James broke away and formed a haulage only firm in about 1935 at Oystermouth Road. Fodens were the mainstay of the fleet until nationalisation in the late 1940s. Tom teamed up with the Lloyd brothers to form Killay Transport for local haulage using a Dodge fleet. After de-nationalisation in the early 1950s Wheale Bros re-appeared with Atkinson as the mainstay long distance lorry and Killay Transport retaining Dodge for local and shorter distance. Tinplate was a premium contract and other steel products to London. Also, long standing contracts with the Hoover plant at Merthyr and Evan Rees butter merchants.
I would love to hear from anyone who knew the company and I would be very grateful to hear from anyone with any photos. Here’s hoping …
