Coming up he M1 last night and there was a stationary vehicle in Lane one just before J31. With there being no hard shoulder or street lights I thought I’d best phone it in. Whilst I was hold (over 3 minutes on 999) I spotted the driver walking up lane 1 trying to thumb a lift! Anyway, eventually I got through and reported it.
Back at the yard, two other drivers come in 10 and 15 minutes after me, of course the conversation turned to the car on the M1. Ten minutes after I passed, there was no police presence and no warning on the ‘smart’ motorway boards.
So I ask myself, what is the point of these ‘smart’ motorways? Yes, they raise an awful lot of money, but if they can’t warn drivers of upcoming hazards, why bother?
Oh yes, I forgot, they raise an awful lot of money.

I was thinking the same thing only last week after getting stuck on numerous occasions on the M1. The amount of money and upheaval its costing must be huge. Don’t need “smart motorways” …just need smart people who can read the highway code for one
