What's the point of the 7.5 limit on the A14!

What is the point of having that 7.5 ton no overtaking limit on the A14, today at 7;45am i was driving behind another lorry doing 50 mph. While on that stretch of road 5 english trucks over took us, with out a care in the world :open_mouth:  :imp: :imp: …and get away with it :imp: . Why could they not of sat behind me like a good trucker!!! Bet your bottom dollar sods law the day i decided to do it i’ll have a plain wrapper sitting behind me who happens to have a film crew in the back filming for BBC traffic cops :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :imp: :imp: :imp:

Tell me about it, i was on there 2day and got overtook on that part of it, it’s not just the uk driver’s
it’s also the foreign driver’s as well :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: as you said if we did it we would get caught
:open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:    well life goes on

I’ve heard that it can’t be enforced as it’s a trial.

its been a bloody long trail then mate…

and ive heard some truckers have been pulled for doing it… dunno wat the punishment would b thou

What happens if you end up behind a tractor doing 20 MPH, can you overtake then?

Used to have the same thing on the A1 just south of Newcastle but I noticed recently the signs have gone. It was daft as it was on a long drag and many a truck can and does slow to as low as 30, what are we ment to do waste more fuel and time extra waiting till hes over the top or used the lane we are banned from.
â– â– â– â–  em I chose the latter option.

I nearly forgot about it this afternoon but saw the sign reminding me just in time to drop back in behind the truck in front.

On the subject of this overtaking ban I contacted the highways agency recently for the results of their time trial survey which they carried out to see whether an overtaking ban would be appropriate. The abbreviated results follow in their Email to me which is copied below.

I refer to your email to the Highways Agency Information Line dated 21 December regarding the HGV restriction along the A14 in Northamptonshire.

In June 2006, as part of the Highways Agency’s strategy to tackle congestion, Ministerial approval was given for the introduction of a trial restricting HGVs from overtaking between the hours of 6am and 8pm on a 3.2km length of the eastbound carriageway of the A14 in Northamptonshire and on a 2.4km westbound length. The scheme for the A14 was promoted to see whether restricting HGVs to the nearside lane when travelling up gradients could improve journey times.

The results from the post-opening evaluation (a copy of this report is enclosed as requested) show that the average journey-times for westbound traffic improved across all time periods for both non-HGVs and HGVs. For eastbound traffic, journey times for both non-HGV and HGVs were similar to before the trial, except in March/April 2008 at the end of the trial when there was an improvement indicating a possible change in the trend.

The average time-savings are relatively small as they are reported over the short length of the trial. However, they do not reflect the perceived improved journey experience for non-HGV drivers, as slow-moving HGVs are less likely to manoeuvre and overtake using lane two.

It is considered that Highways Agency’s objective of improving journey times is sufficient to justify the trial being made permanent and a Traffic Regulation Order restricting lorries to lane two of the trialled section of A14 was implemented on 2 October 2008.

The Highways Agency has consulted with the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association throughout the scheme.

I hope this information has been of some use to you but if I can be of further assistance then please contact me. Alternatively you may wish to contact the Route Performance Manager for this section of the A14, Paul Sinfield. Paul can be contacted by email on paul.sinfield@highways.gsi.gov.uk or on 01234 796135. However please be aware that Paul is currently out of the office until 5 January 2009.

Kindest regards

You will of course note that we now have an overtaking ban on the A14 because there is a PERCEIVED benefit for " car drivers "

So now we know where we stand.

Only until I travel that route in my skoda at 52 mph.

Well that should be faster than the HGV’s as of course they should only be going at a max of 50mph :grimacing:

Theres one here too

but who really gives a S*I%

Reg Number witheld oops yeah that wernt on the GREEN S,B,L. D decker so I cant lie about who it was on the A46 southbound by the sedgeberrow bypass at about half midnight / friday morning

I stick to it unless I end up behind something down 45mph or less, then I wait for a big gap in outside lane and go, yes rules are rules, but common sense is common sense.

Same thing goes for HGVs not using the outside lane of the motorway, what happens if theres a heavy load blocking the inside 2 lanes doing 40mph, does every HGV have to sit behind it all the way to it’s desintation? Bull, I wait for a gap and use the outside lane, everyone else does it because there’s not a mile long queue of HGVs behind it.

Being a yokel too the said driving enforcement, and being ignorant to the STUPID rule i say B******S, if I get caught then I will argue the case ,m I only overtake IF i wont impede another motorist, NAMELY a JUMPED UP TWIT IN A CAR!!! WHO IS RUSHING TOO GET TO THE SHOP THAT IS IN THE Q ON THE HILL WAITING TOO GET PAST TOO DELIVER HIS FRESH BREAD!!! JESUS JOSEPH MOTHER MARY OF GOD,

AND IF ANOTHER TRUCKER SHAKES HIS HAND AT ME FOR DOING SAID OVERTAKE, THEN SORRY BUT YOU NEED MORE BHP!!!

my little vwlt 46 is limited to 56mph,by law,and i can still use the outside lane which to me doesnt make sense.

To make sure that slow C… gets to the RDC before you!!

I had this yesterday afternoon. A mobile stinky manure spreader  I pulled out and passed him,yet as I pulled back in, some prat in an Audi came past playing silly buggers with his brakes and giving me the finger.

Does the stupid prat really think I am going to sit behind the tractor?

i think that muppet passed us both yesterday!
sadly i have been guiltyof overtaking another lorry on said stretch of A14 yesterday only because stupid truck driver refused to back off &
let me back in!! i only over took him as he struggled to get up to 50mph,then as the brow of hill was reached he accelerated to my speed!
wtf just let me in!!!

sadly its people like who you were overtaking who would not just let off to help the traffic flow who make them put these sort of bans in place, if more people were courteous and let people get past quicker we wouldnt have this problem!

It’s ■■■■■ overtaking at 0.0000001 mph that have had these bans implemeted…
I don’t care I really don’t.
I night trunk so the bans aren’t in place.
If I was on days and was faced with the tractor scenario I would happily overtake for the sake of common sense.

I agree.
