Ah that’s what could be up with my Alpha
Without doubt, my current fh12. It’s an 02. In the 4 months I’ve had it it’s had every valve changed on the gear box, a clutch pack, drag link, v bar, compressor, range inhibiter valve, heater matrix, ac compressor, 2 abs sensors and a mirror positioning motor. Now the blooming rear fogs are stuck on as soon as you put the lights on. What’s worse is I have an 06 reg sitting in the yard, ready to go, but my boss won’t put it on the road til the digi software is installed in the office

There seems to be a lot of firms running the crap now, firms that I would have thought would have known better, what’s happening are they doing good deals on them, giving them away or what?

Without doubt the worst vehicle I ever bought was an Iveco 6wheeled mixer L650EKP
it was so bad it was eventually replaced by the manufacturer for an N reg which although
better, at the end of the contract I could not get rid of quick enough.
DAF 105XF 04 plate, jamming front calipers, jamming in 12th gear, power steering knotty, the list was endless and had 4 weeks of everyday downtime, it’s gone to the graveyard now though
My current 58 plate FH 13, broke down on its first day out (brand new) with wiring shorting out in the dash. Since that time the computer throws up different (non exsistent) faults on a regular basis. Air gauges have been replaced 4 times now and the I shift box has had problems. Nothing major just annoying niggles but it has clocked up 370,000kms so has not stood still too long.
The previous MAN tg 55 reg. it replaced clocked up 760,000kms and only had blown bulbs replaced !

The trouble with UK Volvos & Scanias these days is that they are thrown together in shed on a Dutch industrial estate by a bunch of potheads with no pride in the product & one eye on the clock. In the old days they were hand crafted by those wonderful conscientious, tea drinking Norse Vikings who would only use a screwdriver when their magical/mythical swords took a day off. Sad, but true.
the most unreliable for me has to be a VOLVO FS7, it was basicly a 7 ltr engine squashed into an FL6 cab & chassis awfull drive, i was on it for a month & usually by each afternoon came i was driving something else, the FL6 supercharger was a much better truck ,
next has to be daf XF & CF with the AD-blu i don’t think i’ve got away with driving one for a full weekwithout something happening to a valve or a sensor at somepoint

I wouldnt say new trucks are less reliable but these days the management system will shut things down and it needs diagnostics computer to reset even if its an electrical gremlin where a truck of even ten years ago could often be repaired bodged or limped back to the yard and you tend to forget these problems but you remember if you need a big hook to get you home.

None of that seems to relate to an 07 wagon throwing a con rod or an 04 one with jamming brakes,zb’d power steering etc etc though.Whereas the old 7 year old 2800 which I was given seemed like new to me that’s after it already having done a mixture of tramping and trunking work before I was given it to run around 400 miles + per night 5 nights per week and the mileag which the day driver put on it in addition to that.

There are thousands of modern trucks running round with big miles on the clock without missing a beat for every lemon. Just because you had a reliable truck in the 80s it doesn’t mean every truck was a good one. Remember at the cheaper end on the market trucks like the ford d series and bedford tk would be lucky to do 100.000 miles without a engine rebuild.
Even the premium end wasn’t perfect my dad worked for mc governs a large bulk rubbish company in london in the 80s they run lots of daf 2800s and they were great. They upgraded to 3300s and they used to keep two spare engines in the yard as they couldn’t stand the pace and now they run an all scania fleet.
