What's the lowest wage you've ever seen on Cat C

just asking this on here after going in for an interview for a full time class 2 number and being told - after having to ask several times - the annual salary (which was conveniently not mentioned on the ad… :unamused: ) was a figure that is actually rather embarrassing to repeat here. I’ll simply say it was under 17k… and nearly even under 16…

Needless to say, I got out of there pretty sharpish after hearing that. But then it got me wondering… hopefully this isn’t going to become the new ‘norm’ now? Or is it…?

OUCH! :open_mouth: I’ve earned that nearly that post tax up to week 26
Mines about 21 1/2 k

Minimum wage…

But then some drivers doing certain jobs aren’t even worth that :unamused:

Let me guess they wanted the earth for it also? Experience, clean licence and the classic “can do attitude” to go with it…

Are you sure that was before tax and NI?

A place I worked at for a while paid minimum wage to the lads on vans, 7.5 drivers got an extra £6 a day on top of that, and class 2 got an extra £6 a day.

No night out money, as there were no sleepers, you had a premier inn card, and were allowed £20 a night on that, but if you spent £20.01, they didn’t deduct 1p from your wages, they took the lot. To teach you a lesson.

They ran pretty tatty kit, and the job could be a pain some days.

They used to throw a couple of knees up a year, with food, and although the bar wasn’t free, it always had a manager or two at it, with a good float of funds, who’d get you your ale in, and decide not to notice anyone that was getting a bit lary or wobbly.

Usually got about a grand bonus at Xmas too.

Minimum wage at a skip firm. Even the class 1 wag n drag boys

I was on £10 ph agency.

More fool them if they want to do it.

But how many hours are you doing for the money? If it’s driving the bin wagon 35 hours a week it’s ok, they have to pay NMW so on £16000 your only working 41 hours

Couple of jobs Ive worked Class 2 were minimum wage through an agency that Id worked for in the past. Took it as I needed the money. At that point I`d have rather had the £70 for the day than sweet FA

I’ve seen places where “Van @ £7.50 per hour” was paying more than C2 and C+E locally.

I reckon 2012 was the nadir of wages - especially on agency rates.

I bet most of the drivers there lived within spitting distance of the yard and they were on an 8-5 shift Mon-Fri.

It’s annoying firms pay so little, but I find it hard to begrudge the drivers in these sort of scenarios.

lol, I know. That was actually the very first exact same question I asked. Couldn’t believe my ears. Yup, gross. So the take home is about 270-280 a week, or about 1200 a month. Mon-Fri dayshift at least. But it’s still a ■■■■■■■■■

These sort of wages are probably the reason driving standards seem to be falling among HGV drivers. It’s quite sad really, but in all honesty, what are you gonna expect when there’s no longer any incentive to work towards? I’m searching high and low for a non-driving job now. Why put up with all the stress and legislation, and 'responsibilities, and risks, etc, etc, of this pish, when you could just go in to Tosscos or something, stack some shelves for near enough the same rate, be done with it and go home…?

There was another job on in-need for a warehouse picker at about 50 per hour more… says it all about where this industry is at now really.

Went down for an informal chat with the gaffer of a general haulage company near me not long after passing my C last year.
He paid £7 p/h with overtime after 50 hours. This was before the nmw increase.Needless to say i didn’t pursue my intrest.

class 2 our place 36-40k top line…haard work tho
