What's the Longest Rigid...?

Just curious… what’s the longest (UK) rigid vehicle you’ve ever seen? And which haulier/company fleet was it? If you’ve got pics that’s even better

The longest ones I think I’ve ever seen to date are the 6 leggers they run at Co-Op. Can’t be too far off the length of a Neoplan Megaliner bus lol!

Have had a fair few moments of fun with the tail overhang on these… :unamused: trying to turn into and out of tight side streets with parked cars on both sides… Yup some very interesting memories I won’t be forgetting any time soon.

But are these the legal limit? … or are there even longer ones about somewhere on the roads…

12m max length for a rigid under C&U regs. Short day cabs make them look worse.

There are some bigger vehicles, cranes, concrete pumps etc. but these are outside the scope of C&U

I once drove a 32 ft library ‘bus’ which had a beast of an overhang.

It visited some very quaint villages and was a tight fit in some places.

This picture doesn’t really show the length at its best but you get the idea.

here is a new coach we got 13m long we take them round the lakes i hate meeting a caravan on the ambleside to hawkhead coniston road the spray job is all paint no vinyl stickers you dare not get bac to the yard with any scratches lol

The above two are clearly photoshopped that have been acquired online in the past, but a few people have ‘liked’ them thinking they are actual real buses!!!

Then there were these from Skylift, the boom size is 62m and at least the overhang can be easily seen

Then a pair of 44m Bronto Volvo’s heading out to Silverstone one summer

There are a few related groups on Flickr if you’re interested for a peruse

Harry Monk:

Clearly a photoshop job, otherwise that would be hell to get out of the yard! If the axles at the back were further forward it might be somewhere believable

Clearly a photoshop job

I’m inclined to think you’re right!

must have one helluva propshaft

Having a look on the Ainscough website, the cranes they have there are also quite long on the road.

Liebherr MK110, 16.6m long, 4m tall, 3m wide, crane 30m tall and 52m out.
Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1, 21m long, 8 axles, 4m tall, 3m wide, 6 steering axles (4 front, 2 rear)

There are some large cherrypickers out there too, but those are still in the specialist class. 4 axle with a rear lift, HIAB behind the cab and a 40m outreach are known to be around but I have found that most of these move up to articulated vehicles, so with a 3, 4 or 5 axle artic unit with a BFO HIAB behind the cab and the fifth wheel behind that.

The shortest I have come across was a 4x2 Renault Magnum unit with a HIAB on the back and a concrete block for ballast as well as the same unit without the crane, but that mostly pulled short trailers. I notice EVE Telecom have moved away from using those now to using wag and drags with HIABs.

Doesnt look like its strapped either

Hmm, If I drove a bus…

this comes in at just under 11m big overhang with the tag up,

I owned an ex coloroll truck that had been used to transport light goods, it was a Ford Cargo 1718 with a day cab and a pod, the body was 31 feet long and the total length was 38’ 6" (11.7M). Height was 13’ 4". You had to use a lot of road with it. It was a pig when empty especially in the wind, I only slept in it a few times it scared to ■■■ out of me, it was like a big dipper ride. No pictures I’m afraid.

Did’nt Langdons have a fridge made special for them sometime in the 80’s/90’s. IIRC it was a Volvo 8 wheeler with 1 steer axle and tri axle (2 drive and 1 tag) on the rear. Great big long thing featured in one of the truck mags of the time.

This one?

was on the 8 wheelers photo thread a while back. Still looks about 12m long.

My current motor is 12m long but doesn’t appear that long as it has high ground clearance, sleeper cab and crane on an 8x2 chassis with a plant body. If you look at an old Hewdens Series 4 Scania it looks much longer as they run low profile tyres, have short cabs and distribution chassis but if you park them side by side they are both 12m long.

I used to build caravan transporters and the regulations were abused to the maximum, things like removing bumper bars and fabricating narrower ones, or using a quite legal adjustable sliding draw bar which could add 5 or 6 feet to the maximum allowable length.

Our biggest problem was finding a prop shaft long enough, until we managed to perfect our own extensions. If we could make a 10’ prop, we could fit in a 10’ mid section of new chassis rail and centre bearing.

That’s the one… A tautliner and not a fridge…
