Jeez, road haulage in the UK is not a profitable, stable, sustainable business. Anyone with half a brain can see that, it’s too volatile. Eddie makes what a few quid each week off each truck he runs?
Effort/Risk versus reward doesn’t really make sense.
Ok, so they have some warehousing contracts but not enough. Even the Tesco haulage work isn’t that lucrative, it’s decent but they’re not charging what they should be for it which is why they’ve got the vast majority of it.
From what I saw on the C5 programme they seemed to do an awful lot of running or 1 & 2 pallet drops.
Then empty to collect a couple of pallets back.
Not much profit sending an artic to do a Transit van job.

after having a 1 2 1 at newark today, and telling the nice lady i wanted the money , where do i sign , then being told that there isnt the “scope for payment” makes you wonder , those stobart lawers must be doing some overtime thisweekend
IF you want the money
If the depot is closing, & theyre expecting you to transfer to another depot. inform them you do not have suitable reliable transport to enable you to travel to another site outside the local area as you live locally and you walk to work or you are given a lift by your partner who uses the car to go to their place of work, and it would be unreasonable of them to expect you to put yourself in debt to purchase a 2nd car to travel to that site, or relocate yourself & your family, as the position at that site may not be ideal and you would be out of pocket, if down the line you find that the job at that site isnt suitable for you. your line manager & your work mates may know you have a car, but I doubt the HR & decision makers will know this, & I doubt HR & line managers will talk to the other about your personnel circumstances. Maybe during this consultation period you park your car elsewhere & be seen to walk into work, or be given a lift in will reinforce the ruse
Tesco wanted us off our contract as soon as they took it back in house from wincanton but they didn’t want all the hassle and bad publicity that went with it so they used stobarts to do they’re dirty work. Stobarts only have a 3 year contract at Doncaster. They can’t possibly be making any money as they’re running it on agency and contractors. The reason they gave for making us all redundant was they would use there “empty miles” to reduce the carbon foot print. It was a stitch up by Tesco, I know I’m an ex Doncaster driver
how many i know not one company not sign contract for 20 years,or forever.basicly any contract for 3 years, after can be extended ,can be not.??Tesco don t give contract forevers and Stobart or any company don t want sign cotract forevers
welcome to the site, everyone bashes STOBRATS on here!
full agree.Docaster drivers must first blame Tesco.because if you was working for Tesco and have contract.so if Tesco give jobs for Stobart . first if you agree with Stobart termin and condition Tesco can transfer you to Stobart.if you not agree Tesco must pay you all what must pay follow you cotract.

Heard that one back in 2008! They were going to start up and take the P&G contract back!

Know what you mean dessy but I’ve heard the same rumour with identical details twice within the last two weeks, one ex driver and one from someone who socialises in the same circles as the Irlams
I would have credited the Irlams with more sense than to put money back into haulage in a big way especially to compete for work off Stobarts who must already be working for the slimest of margins.
There surely comes a point with any haulier when it just gets too big to manage. If you have 20 trucks and 25 drivers, it’s easy to see where everyone is all the time, who is hanging the job out, and which contracts are profitable.
If you have a decent warehouse, then you can hold stock ready for distribution and choose to do it in-house or sub it out. Warehousing is much more profitable than transport.
Maybe when you get 100 trucks, it is still possible to keep an overall view of what is happening hour to hour. You can see whether the planners and managers are doing their jobs right and still know most of the driver’s names. After that it all becomes spreadsheets, contracts and bean counters.

avril in charge! autotragics most popular former employee!!
A quick read on their (Stobarts) website seems to show she’s an expert at turning struggling companies around.
It would also seems she flogs them on at a profit.
So maybe a lot more bits to be sold?
She looks fit as well new poster girl now she’s oaid foxy fi off.

Passed the Crick depot the other day and the place was empty… I remember spending half an hour walking round the yard searching for my unit at the start of a shift because it was always full. What’s happening there?
