not really been down there much in the last 12 months.but was sent in to pick up some white goods from the nyk sheds there.when i got to the area where most of the containers 2/3 lanes where completely empty plus the rail tracks for the auto cranes had been ripped up aswell.there must of been between 500/1000 containers in the rest of the opperating lanes.
what is happening they finally going to shut the place down or just run the small contianer ships in there.as i was talking to a m8 whos been into the new tilbury berth was talking to a guy there and was told not even these new super contianer ships can fill the lanes in one berth area if it completely off loaded there,
It’s about 5 lanes that have been dismantled, I have asked some of the staff what’s happening, but they are not sure, they did say the cranes have been dismantled because they can no longer get the parts to keep them running, so have just scrapped them.
There is rumour of a super container terminal being built in the Thames estuary, so may be they will wait and see if it is built before reinvesting in the terminal.
They could just be spending the money at Felixstowe before they start down there.

Cheers, didnt know they had started building it, looking at the layout its very similar to the way thamesport is, expect slow turn arounds.
i didnt realise they came built up! is that how felistowes 8 and 9 berth cranes arrived - centre of gravity looks a little dodgey! so judging by the straddlers also on board it looks like it’ll be the same style as southampton and tilbury - not to mention seaforth?? which in my opinion is a totally outdated method of doing things, based on the limited height and floor area you have for storing the containers. doesnt strike me as being such a big threat to felixstowe as some have said it will be, tilbury, theres been some investment there lately, but nothing at thamesport. where exactly is this new one being built? - because thats another thing with thamesport, its a bit of a chew to get to!

Its being built a few miles east of tilbury, had a look at there web site and the lay out of the terminal is a very similar set up as thamesport, straddlers used to sevice the ship to shore cranes, and automatic over head cranes servicing trucks and container stacks.
And i think it may be a threat to felixstowe because they would still be able to operate in bad weather.

that actually doesnt look too shabby does it, i can see why they would want to use those straddlers now, i wonder if they will operate a vbs system based on the location of the box? that way it would prevent a rake of lorries all turning up at the same time wanting boxes from the same stack. providing some where to park up overnight would be a nice thought to
