Met up with a mate of mine in Poplars Lymm this morning, haven’t been in for about 5 or 6 yrs, so I got a surprise how it has changed.
It looks just like a MSA now rather than a Truckstop.
Part of truck park next to Maccy Ds is now a car park, the cafe/ restaurant has been halved and there is now a bloody M&S in the old half. The counter is the bar, so I assume the old Trucker’s lounge bar has gone. …It just looks like they are trying to edge the drivers out gradually and make it into just another Service area.
We got a breakfast each for about a fiver, they didn’t kill you with portions btw, it looked more like ‘nouvelle cuisene’ although I must admit it was quite tasty what we had.
I tried to use my Poplar 2000 discount card which I got about 15 yrs ago but the girl just looked at me
Also the truckers shop was shut today.
How long has it been like that, just recently or for a while now.

I’ve only been there once myself. The lady in the little shop was alright, its SNAP parking so didn’t pay. Having Sainsbury next door was great.
Didn’t talk to her much, spent abit of time the next morning chatting to the young girl at the food counter
Stopped at Lymm first when it was still the hut across the road. Went once when they opened on the present site, when they had the entry and exit barriers, before I started local work on the milk. Been a few times over the last two years, but it’s just a MSA now.
Seamed stockings on show on a very bonny lass at the old place across the road which made queuing for your brecky enjoyable…
Since the new place opened i’ve used it about 2 times for overnights and fuelled up there a few dozen times, haven’t been for probably 8 years and doesn’t sound like i’ll be revisiting either.
Truck shop is like eBay guff, but only at double the price. And you have to keep your receipt for anything you buy, otherwise you’re stuff when it goes belly up, which it will, because it’s nearly all “all ride” tat.
Miserable bint on the counter could at least have the decency to smile as she robs you.
I’ve only spent the night one there once, and it wasn’t out of choice, went to use the loo at about 5am, and there were rivers (I kid you not) of urine all over the place. Had to teach myself ballet to not drown.
Another time we had a prob with our fuel pumps at work, so most of us ended up fueling up there, what an unpleasant place to lose a large chunk of your day for no reason. Oh sorry, my mistake, it must be perfectly reasonable to get in a 15 or a 30, whilst the queue is about 8 deep and you have your brew. Even the Gregs is operated by dimmer than usual Gregs operatives.
My last and enduring memory of the place was in early 2012. I remember it used to be a lottery as to whether or not the fuel pump would actually work and dispense fuel after you’d gone through the rigmarole of inputting your card etc. Some pumps worked, others simply didn’t for not apparent reason. I went inside for assistance only to be told something like “Yeah sorry mate, that happens sometimes”…ok then, so which pumps work and which don’t? “Dunno pal, you’ll just have to keep pulling round and trying random pumps”. Yeah no problem, I’ll just keep rejoining the queue of trucks on each pump until I find one that works with my card and waste a couple of hours…
Remember when it was about £6 to park there. Then Motto took it over… Standards went through the floor, prices went through the roof. Drivers used to get priority but now if a couple of coachloads roll up , ya 45’s up before the first mouthf,ul …

Is Lymm still a “Poplars” choice for the Social Club of Chutney Miners?
I heard that the bogs were very ‘poplar’ with the fraternity you mention a year or so ago.
A few night men stopping for a quick pony made it a VERY quick pony, after witnessing and hearing some of the live entertainment in some of the other cubicles.
Went there last year, and it has changed for the worse in my opinion, its been upgraded for the travelling reps kind of folk, too posh for us normal truckers ( i had trouble getting the egg/beans and tomatoes down the front of my shirt ) meals were a bit pricey, but i think thats to pay for the waitress service, i much preferred the old open style of canteen, i would only stop there again if it was convenient to me, would be better if it had a greggs then i wouldnt have to pay over the top for what i wanted.
