Whats for dinner?

Whats a typical dinner for those of you that live your truck and how many of you cook proper meals as oposed to having sandwichs or “all day breakfests” in a can etc?

Tonight im not sure what to make really, either sweet n sour chicken or maybe sirlion steak and mash, not that hungry really so probably wont waste the steak.

Streak, steak, steak

Irish steak should I say

I’ve done f all today so not really hungry, cant eat alot as it is so dont want to cook it and end up leaving half. Could do a fry up, sausages, eggs, bacon, beans and toast but not really feeling a near suicidal dinner tonight.

When I used to drive on the continent I was really against cooking in the cab, so much good reasonably priced food on offer that it never made sense. However with inverters, microwaves and fridges readily available and the choice of outside food restricted to complete crap out of a box or fast food, it now makes sense to cook in the cab, one it gives you a lot more choice, two it is far healthier and three it saves you money, apart from the washing up, there is no downside to it.

Recently I’ve been making meals to take with me, curries, shephards pie, that sort of thing. Been a bit restricted, because I cannot by law, carry a gas bottle on the truck, but there are electric hot plates available now and the good old George Foreman type grill is useful too.

With the right equipment, I’ll do pasta or rice dishes, using fresh ingredients rather than jar’s of sauce, with grilled meat or fish to accompany them. Casseroles or stews are another possibility with a slow cooker, although that could be a problem, the delicious aromas might just drive me mad as I drive down the road waiting for dinner time

There is a website at roadcookin.com that gives lots of recipies that are easy and cheap to make while out on the road, they also tell you the fat/carb/crap content in each serving, so people who have dietary issues can find out what thay can and can’t eat from the various recipes

I’ve just had beef and Guinness casserole, made at home and brought away in Tupperware box. Warmed through in my pan on the trusty old gas stove and it went down a treat! I usually cook something that is suitable for heating in my pan at home and bring it away for Monday and Tuesday tea. Wednesday is usually a fresh carton of soup or something out of a tin and Thursday is takeaway night!

Newmercman nice one on the link will look at that one

Beef and Guinness casserole sounds nice mmmm

Whys that?

Stupid laws, the small aerosol type ones are ok, but a proper gas ring is a no no. Somebody probably singed their eyebrows once and that was enough for the health and safety idiots to stick their oar into things, so now we are not allowed to have gas bottles in the cab at all, I don’t know how it works if you have a chassis mounted locker, but I ain’t got one, so that’s not a lot of help to me if you can anyway

When i was tramping … was never without the gas stove … omelette was always quick easy … cheese / tomato or left-over spuds from home … nice FRESH crusty bread from village Boulangerie

As has been said … bring stuff from home to warm up. Look at what Switchlogic get to cook on his gas stove  I’ve used his receies @ HOME :grimacing:

i cook everything at home freeze it and stick it in the fridge as said before its a lot healthier than the heart attack crap on offer you normally get also a couple of ding meals for the microwave plenty of eggs ( love scrambled eggs ) and try an eat as much fruit as poss and if all goes wrong i do have the odd tin in the cuboard :sunglasses:

On uk work I always self cater, for tonight I have just had homemade stew that I defrosted last night, mmmmmmmm lovely. I just warmed it up in a saucepan.

I had chicken tikka masala for breakfast :open_mouth: , and a toasted corned beef and Philadelphia cheese sandwich for lunch. I was going to wander over the pub and have a bite to eat later but not hungry.

Yes cliff cheers, some drivers are on it full time, some are uk work, I mix and match and basically cover what needs covering. It’s the easiest and steadiest job I’ve had.

Is the young lad still driving for devanneys. Was talking to him at a drop a few months ago. Think he was in a 55plate white fh. Forgot the name of the place were we we’re.
But he was loading like bails of fibre. You may have been there yourself on containers. It’s off the m62 on the a638 towards cleckheaton turn left at lights on to spen lane up hill then sharp left on a blind bend. Nightmare to find if you use postcode it takes you to the VW garage on the a653 about 3 miles away.
Look on google maps can’t find company name now really doing my head in.

thats good to hear :sunglasses:

I like fresh pasta, usually spinach and ricotta ravioli, with a fresh tomato, basil and chilli sauce  Easy to cook and relatively healthy. If I feel carnivorous I’ll fry up some Spam to through in with it. Some freshly grated Parmesan sprinkled on top finishes it off nicely. I stop at the parsley garnish
