What Would You Retrain To Do?

rob22888:

Pimpdaddy:
I would retrain to be a train driver:)

The idea of doing that appeals less and less to me everytime I think of it.

I imagine i’d find it fantastic at first. But 10 years or so later… going up and down the same tracks everyday tedium would surely set in and i’d be well and truly trapped. I’d have built a lifestyle based on my 50K a year earnings and 35 hour week, i’d be bored [zb] of the job but know for a fact i’ll never earn anywhere near what I am for the hours anywhere else. So I just plod on bored out of my tree to retirement.

That’s if i’m not out on my ear within the next decade or so when the computers take over & the unions make a hash of it.

It’s a dead end job just like truck driving. At least the wages & hours driving trucks make moving on relatively accessible.

I guess you voted Conservative by your comment’s? Train driving is the next step up from lorry driving and is something I would love to do. Although, I’ve worked for the same company for too long and would loose more than I’d gain driving train’s.

It appeals a lot to me, the pay & benefits alone are enough to keep me happy and out of boredom until retirement;)

The company I work for have their own train’s but the work is sub contracted. :imp:

Well I’m back at work today.
Local as promised.
Can’t say I’m enjoining it tho.
Thing is if I didn’t come back I would never have come back.

It sounds really lame, but the only thing you can really do is to be kind to yourself and let time heal. Now, that’s not going to stop you having a hard time or make it any less scary or whatever emotion it is that’s going through you, but it will fade slowly.

A friend of mine suffered a ‘nearly much worse’ attack about 2 years ago. She’s slowly getting her confidence back, still has a bit of a wobble from time to time, but seeing the difference between her now and in the first couple of weeks after it happened is like night and day.

Best of luck to you, take it easy.

Well done Steve for getting back to work, it takes a lot of courage to carry on after something like that has happened to you, & it takes time to get over.

Don’t let the perpetrators wreck your life !!

General, I hope your friend regains her confidence quickly too.

Thanks Bonnie Lass.

My firm promised to keep me local and they have.
It’s helping.
I’m not going to let some cowardly thugs get to me now.
Upwards and onwards.

horror stories mate.if you like driving, then keep driving ,if you didnt like it anyway then nows the time to look at alternative employment.your not going to have a relaxing night out cabbing it for a while unless you park in a secure truckstop.try this if you live local…park your unit when you finish work of an evening in the same place…close the curtains, walk about 100 yards to where your mates parked his van, climb into the back with the rest of your mates, and spend a quiet lads evening discussing topical affairs until hopefully the rats return.(even if its different rats, then the retribution would still be well deserved).theres obviously no cameras to be watching you anyway.my mums advice to me were the words…chin up…its served me well sofar.dont let the vermin win.

God that’s tempting
Thing is, even if I parked there again, caught them and gave them a pasting, I’d come off worse regarding the law.

no cameras,no witnesses, more of your mates than them…invite them in the van,and go for a nice sightseeing tour of wherevers remote 400 miles away…no money,no mobiles, leave them 1 at a time in their skiddies and socks…then see how long it takes them to find a hospital to extract their clakkerbags from inside them…tempting thought alright…chin up

^^^^^^

Sounds like a very scary experience. It’s good to hear your company is being supportive.
I’m sure it’ll only be a matter of time until these scrotes pick the wrong lorry and get a beating!
Keep on keeping on fella.
Cavey.

Good on you Steve. The scrotes will get what they deserve soon mate. In the meantime, you carry on doing your thing pal.

I thought I could cope with this but I’m not doing very well.
I am very depressed and still upset about it and my firm are not being that helpful.
I think I may seriously have to think about my life and if I want to continue as a driver.
I may need psychiatric help.
Is that through a doctor?
Please guys I’m desperate

Sorry to read that things aren’t improving. I’m sure talking about it will help; just like coming on here is better than keeping your thoughts bottled up inside. I think I can safely say that all of us on this forum want you to get over this and back to normal. Talking it through with someone is going to help; ■■■■■■-therapy can work wonders. Your GP should be able to put you in touch with someone.

About retraining: I did some research into jobs that had absolutely no regulations or laws controlling them. I only thing I could come up with was Portrait Painter.

Your doing very well going back to work after what happened to you Steve . It takes a LOT of courage to keep going & to keeping doing your job, you have got that courage & you 've shown yourself & everyone else just that, we’ll done you!
It will take time to gain confidence back but it will happen , focus on what your doing what your driving etc . Don’t let your thoughts drift backwards to what is now in the ‘past’, but channel them forwards to the now & future, & blank out what happened, Don’t give it another thought , just keep focusing forward ,
Don’t give up all what you have worked for in life ,
YOU CAN get over this Steve.

I parked by a a small garage on the National One between Madrid and Burgos, with a full load of shoes from Alicante.
It was a windy night, the cab moving with the wind, but at about 3 am, I awoke knowing something wasn’t right, as the wind had stopped but the cab still moving.
Peeking through the curtain, I saw the trailer doors open, a car and van parked up.
I blasted the horn, the man in the garage comes running out and stood in front of the vehicles speeding off.
They took about sixty grands worth in a short time.
Like yourself, it took a long time to get over the experience, waking up to any noise in the night.

You’ve obviously got the support of your bosses, and you’ll get your confidence back – just give it time. In the interim just bear in mind that, one day, it’s just possible that the toe-rags will pick on the wrong wagon:-

I had a similar situation a few years ago… but the outcome was ever so slightly different.

I am (un)lucky enough to be a big bloke (like, seriously big!) – and while in the Army I trained with both The Paras and The Marines.

The Police and the Ambulance guys who attended the scene all laughed like drains and, as plod said, (and I’m paraphrasing here) ‘It’s obviously self-defence. After all, which magistrate/judge is possibly going to believe that a group of four scrotes were set upon, and beaten senseless, by a solitary lorry driver?’

Sometimes the boot really is on the other foot!

I am sorry to read that Steve. You need to get down to the doctor’s quick-sharp. He/she will be able to refer you to the right people to help.

Thanks guys.
It’s good to hear from you all x.
I’m not looking for sympathy but my life is a big uphill struggle.
My home life is suffering and I also have an operation looming.
I will see my GP.
Talking to you all helps.
Thanks again X.
