What Weight?

Does anyone know the average weight of an empty fridge trailer? just a ball park figure will do (with fuel)

the reason i’m asking is that i am being subbied out to a company with my unit tomorrow and friday and we are plated at 28t. they have said we will only be doing the light stuff but it would be nice to have a rough idea of how much you can carry without panicking too much or attracting attention from certain people.

cheers people

IIRC a quality tri axle fridge trailer like a Gray and Adams would be about 9 tonnes.

Between 8&9.5 tonnes

cheers gents, so if i work on about 9t as a rule of thumb then i should be ok (ish)?

cheers

As a rule of thumb I operate to 17 tonnes for an empty tractor/trailer combination.

what I would use aswell. I see loads of 4x2’s pulling reefers so the loads you get in them can’t be all that heavy, unless you have a non chilled of frozen back load

i know with a mega on and all my crap for the week i’m at 16480 kerbside weight (i was in the tip the other day and looked at the weights in and out!) so im guessing roughly 8t for unit and 9 for trailer i should be ok for a good few pallets of chilled or frozen!

The reason I use 17 is because I saw the unladen trailer weight sticker once showing just over 8000k’s and the unit weighed pretty much the same…so 16.5tonnes ish but I just round it up

What unit? I had a wendy house wide body stralis 450 and the temp plate said 8025kg of the unit

the unit is a daf xf95

if i am slightly overweight (not me personaly as im always overweight by quite a lot) where would i stand as the unit is a 4x2 and capable/designed for 38. would it only be am issue if i was over 38 or does it go on plated weight?

It goes on plated weight. Although what I don’t understand is some of our 4x2’s are 38t, and some are 40t…but they’re all Volvo FM12’s

If the max design weight of the unit with trailer is 38t then you will not be allowed to go over that, even if you have weight to spare on axles. I’m guessing if you were caught over your max permissable weight then vosa would pump you rotton. We all know how they love to shaft us

its all down to the VED (Road tax) apparently our units are cheaper to tax than some cars!!!

the 6x2 stralis I had, had a right poxy plated weight of something like 22.something. I can’t remember the exact weight but I remember being shocked when I found out. That will be fun trying to stay legal when trying to get a full load of paper reels (28-29t) out of St Regis

if you unit has been downrated to 28 tonnes for the cheaper road tax, and your truck/trailer combination tares out at 17 tonnes, that leaves 11 tonnes for payload.

just because the design weight is 38 tonnes, it goes on what it is taxed at I.E. 28 tonnes, anything over that and you are overweight, regardless of what the unit can theoretically carry.

HTH

Wow…I didn’t realise you could label them on a tax basis :S I suppose it makes sense for companies who don’t do heavy work.

maxium vehicle weights

4x2 tractor unit with fridge box unladen =16.18 tons
plated at 38 tons max load must not exceed 21.82 ton

4x2 tractor unit with a fridge box unladen =16.18 ton
plated at 40 ton max load must not exceed 23.82 ton

6x2 tractor unit with fridge box unladen =17.32 ton
plated at 44 tons max load must not exceed 26.68 ton

4x2 tractor unit axle 1 steer [weight 7.100 kgs]
4x2 tractor unit axle 2 drive [weight 11.5 kgs]

we were given a sheet with these figures due to a few issues when we got 4x2 units.
the issue was more over weight on the drive axle than overall weight, we now put a few lighter pallets over drive axle or leave a bit of a gap ,in my experiance youve got to think about how you put on pallets a lot more with 4x2,s, than 6x2,s
but if i was you the best thing to do isdont go anywhere near where vosa might be

A rough guide would be if your drive axle tyres look squashed then you could be over weight. Like I said, that’s a very rough guide lol

yes, but, LeeG’s truck has also been down plated to 28 tonne from 38 tonne, so the payload will be 10 tonne less than you have posted
