After reading lots of comments on other threads about wage rates I thought I would do a rough estimate of what’s what.
If you were to max your hours weekly doing 3 x 15 & 2 x 13 which works out at 71 hours what would you be taking home after tax and insurance.
£7ph £19383
£8ph £22152
£9ph £24921
the above is after paying 25% tax & ins
below is after paying 45% tax & ins
£10ph £27306
£11ph £29336
after you earn £35000ish a year you pay 40% tax so is it really worth trying to chase the job that pays more than £9 an hour.

A good wage is whatever you are happy with.
That is correct, I worked for a firm for a good wage and was happy enough to do anything for them. I started for a firm that paid a crap wage so my attitude and work ethic towards the job was reflected in this, however we have just got a pay raise, not in the same league as the other job, but fair, so therefore I now approach the job in a different way.
Employers do not seem to grasp that paying a ■■■■ poor wage to drivers can be a false economy in the long run.

The first 10,000 is tax free. You pay 20%tax on the 10,000 to 31,000, 40% on 31,000 - 150,000, 45% above 150,000. If you earn 40,000, you pay 20% on 21,000, and 40% on the other 9,000…NOT 40% on the whole lot.
If you earn £10 per hour for 71 hours, that’s roughly £35,000 per annum. You pay tax on £25,000 of it. 21k at 20%, leaves you with 16,800. 4,000 at 40% leaves another £2400. Totalled up that’s £29,200 AFTER tax. These are VERY rough figures, but it shows you’re way out.

You need to do correct calculations before posting:
£9ph is £25549
&
£10ph is £28060
Both the above are take home pay based on 71hrs over 52wks with a tax code 1000l.
You chase the lower rate by all means and leave the big pay to the intelligent folk

No you only pay the higher rate on pay you earn above the threshold, and yes there are jobs now available in many parts of the country that pay considerably more than £9 you just need to be in the “know”
71 hours is getting on for 2 weeks work (and i’d be sacked if i worked 71), it’s not 1963 any longer boys and girls, you don’t have to do the work of two people just to keep a roof over your head.
71 hours IS two weeks’ work for many people. It’s only four hours short of that for me. Therefore £35k on the top line for 71 hour weeks would actually equate to no more than £18.5k on normal hours. Not that good after all is it?

71hrs was just the example hrs the op was using in relation to hourly/yearly wage. Climb down off your high horse and take a chill pill.
While your wittering on about 35k and 71hrs a wk ‘work’ I’m pretty sure a huge amount of working class people would swap their 40 hr a wk job on 35k for our 71hrs on 35k based on the fact a huge amount of our time is chilled out, radio on etc etc. Hardly a lot of hard work is it !!

Actually I don’t think they would, I’m sure they will prefer to spend those extra 31 hrs chilling
at home with family or friends, daft statement I think.

Daft doesn’t begin to describe it, I can only presume you’re being polite. Farcical, idiotic, ludicrous, hilarious…

If they’ve got family and friends that is !! Not really a daft statement, you’ll find a fair few of those people on here who’ve changed their careers to join our merry ranks.
I respect your opinions though, we all have different views on hrs, rates etc etc & at the end of the day if we are happy in what we do …crack on, if not…get out

I think you’re right when you say a lot of people have changed careers, but I’d be astounded if any of them were earning £35k before the swap
put all these wages and the statements that most of the time is spent chilling, or not hard work ect against those of the armed forces serving abroad, or nhs staff ect or ex grads who are 1000,s in debt and spent 3 years or more training for their occupation, and some drivers are saying that driving a truck deserves more money??
just dont make sense when you compare it all together…
