What unit?

Hello all.

I am starting to look at units for private use, mainly just to move my steam roller around with. We need something with as few electronics as possible as we will need to maintain it as much as possible ourselves. we restore the odd old lorry so have the main tools and skills for manual jobs but do not want to be getting involved with complex ecu’s, fly by wire, engine sensors etc as far as possible.

Ideally we would like something with a high sleeper cab but would settle for a standard sleeper. Eaton box is a nice to have but not essential (however manual box is). Obviously would like something with as good reliability as possible. As we won’t use it much we can’t justify spending more than 5-£6k so can’t be getting too carried away.

Does anyone know what would tick the most number of boxes? We are probably talking something 80’s/90’s, maybe erf ec9/10 Olympics etc?

Any suggestions appreciated! (We are not in a position to buy yet so are not looking for a specific vehicle, just make and model for now).

Many thanks,

Jon

The answer lies within the arrowed circle.

Volvo is what you want. Something along the lines of an FL or similar.

There’s Renualts for that money but they’re ■■■■

Yea I like the look of the premiums and magnums but I think there’s quite a lot of electronics in them isn’t there?

That’s the point I was going for. You’d get a decent enough (for what you want) Magnum for what you want to spend but they’re stuffed full of electronics which are unreliable at best

I’d say you’re spot on there, even before I got to this line I was thinking “This bloke needs an ERF”.

Or a Foden?

Turbo star??

I would like a Foden as our old ones are Fodens, however i wasnt sure how much electronics they had. What kind of thing would we be talking, Alpha?

You can’t beat the EC10 or 11 as there are still plenty for spares and they don’t go wrong very often .

ERF EC11 high roof or full Olympic with 380 ■■■■■■■ and twin split 'box is what you need! Plenty around at your budget, but don’t wait too long, or they will all have been exported!!!

More good suggestions, many thanks.
