What type of trailer is this?

Can someone explain what this is called and how it works please.
I didn’t get up close and have a nosey as I didn’t want the driver to think I was going to ■■■■ on his wheel.
Plus I couldn’t decide which one to go for! :open_mouth:

Its a splitter mate, with rear steer, which is the rear axle is set so far back

Probably a Nooteboom

Edit: just had another look at the picture and realised my post was utter pish.

Am I the only one to think that looks Photoshopped?

Is that a type of donkey engine behind the bars?

OK. If that’s real I can only think it has some kind of ‘self shunt’ engine for the trailers front axle as the front tandem looks raised in the pic and put down when needing to be moved without a trailer.

Don’t think there is a donkey engine there, if it was it would be a Genset (generator) for powering reefer units. Though I think you’ll find the switches above the side guard are for disconnecting the 2 half of the trailer, then infront of that panel is a dropped down twist lock, situated there for a 20’ box on the rear trailer and a twistlock housing, in which to place a portable lock for the a 20’ on the front trailer, underneath that are suzies connecting air and electrics to the rear trailer.

When you put a pair of 20’ boxes on a splitter the front trailer axle travel raised. When you need to split the trailer, you drop the front bogie by air, like any conventional lift axle set up, disconnect the suzies, wind down landing legs on the front and some types rear of the rear trailer, disconnect the locking pins between the 2 half and pull the front away. Then you can travel to that containers destination as a kind of short 20’ trailer. to hook them back together is broadly that in reverse, though that is a rough guide, as most manufacturers make them slightly diferent

A D-tec, thought it was a Nooteboom, still both Dutch

First time I’ve seen a bit of kit like this. And I understand certain instances where it could be usual. But those instances must be few and far between. Wonder if it earns it keep as it won’t be cheap.

See this daily in the Benelux…

Because weights are different in Holland (up to 50 tons), it gives you a lot more flexibility to take 2 20 foot with 15 or 16 tons each, and you do not have a problem with a heavy 40 or 45 foot container.
As Geoffo says, they are quite common in the benelux.

Will definitely earn its keep, pair of 20’’ every day, 2 tips one trip.

Yep agree there, and with it being goosenecked for the 40/45 to be loaded with neck in the container tunnel, get under all those 4m bridges too. Though if you have a 40/45 on for a day, it is bit of a wasted day, refer to my above comment

What’s wrong, don’t you trust me?

Thanks for the answers guys, I couldn’t make out that it was 2 separate trailers!
