Gonna sound weird, but my best memories are from when I’d just passed my C+E and I was driving an 06 Iveco Strallis on nights, it was an active space 3 with the old jet style gear selector (semi-auto thing), LOADS of room, comfortable seat and powerfull engine.
Would have loved to have been tramping in it, just soo much space and sensible layouts too, unlike everything I’ve driven since.
driving a daf 1900 4 wheel grab/tipper for p.lowerey and sons civil engineers from heston.middlesex.
loved that motor, felt like king of the road at the time-12 speed splitter and an eminox stack, sounded lovely
Apart from the DAF and going where I wanted, my initial foray into transport was a learning experience. My mate and I used to paint cars and work got in the way a bit, he drove a box van on waste paper collections but if the car needed another coat he would send me out in the lorry. Every now and again I would get a load off my mother just to put some money in the beer kitty. They were carefree days and the boss didn’t have a clue what we were doing. I remember that Leyland Terrier like a long lost brother, it did about 85mph and had a decent radio, what else does anyone want when they are still 16
I drove for a company called Glyn John transport in 1985, the 1st proper long distance job I had when I came out of the Army I was 24.And the further they would send me the more I liked it.It was a brilliant job with a good set of drivers, they were all older than me and I would love listening to all the stories
The only thing to better that was when I became an owner driver in 1992 I was married by now and I parked my first truck outside my house it was a 1984 Mercedes 1628 4x2 tractor unit I payed 2 grand for it, And it took me all over the UK and down as far as Italy. No spare wheel no fuel card no breakdown cover happy days!
MAN 17-501, The absoloute Dogs in ithe early 90s, used to Fly over Pamplona… Tramping around Europe from Sweden to Gib and all bits inbetween, miss it like mad now, would do it again like a shot… but for the right money…Oh Happy Days…
Stuck to choose between two jobs & motors really. 1st was multi dropping steel for dry-lining & cladding all over the UK but mainly Scotland & the north in a 2100 6x2 rigid Daf (flat with sheets & ropes). New motor every 3 years & all the whistles & bells we wanted, probably still be at it if the firm hadn’t been bought out by a multi national when the boss passed away & all 4 of us drivers were redundant within 6 months.
2nd was tramping europe in my beloved fridges out of Uttoxeter. My 3 series topline was nice but Volvo converted me with the FH (better living space) so my left ■■■■■■ XL Gobstopper won the day! Happy, happy days!

Right now. As anyone who saw the video when I got it will know getting my brand new Scania on October 6th last year was the best day of my working life. I know many will think me sad for that but having a brand new truck was a dream, and it just so happened that I got it whilst doing my dream job. 10 months with it and only me, the bosses and my dad have ever driven it. So good times.
Hi all.Obviously, after nearly 40yrs of driving you change your mind as trucks get more modern as time goes by.
For me in 1972 when i got a brand new volvoF89[remember there were only about a dozen in the whole of England],plus i was only 22 and driving international so it was special.
The next special truck i had was in 1977 driving for a Dutch company to Afghanistan. We got DAF 2800s 6wheel double drive, with a kitchen built in the cab so that was rather special.
As i am now geriatric i think the Volvo F16 660hp Ishift 8 wheel tipper i now drive is a good, modern truck for ‘‘old people’’ Mike
got my class 1 in the 70’s with williams tpt in bristol the motor was a daf 2600 day cab but done a lot of klicks with it then got a scania 80 super . moved to freightline tpt started with a aec mandator what a flyer when you could get into top but for me the f88 dogs b******s no m 25 no cameras from the feeder in bristol to battersea bridge 2hrs 30 best times and bloody good money tommy williams was a good boss as long as you didnt get in range of his walking sticks lol. good bunch of lads there and we did have the crack
Driving an F reg (1988) Volvo F 10 delivering light bulbs and street lighting gear to rdc,s and council depots all over the country, it might be Inverness one week and maybe Kent after. But got married, so came off the tramping, but they were happy days.

Would like to add one more.
Giltspur Bullens, running out of South Street in Glasgow in 1988.
2300 DAF artic running all over the UK doing furniture deliveries, office removals and ATM installation’s etc.
Depot’s I remember were Newton-le-Willows, Hinckley, Greenford and somewhere near Tottenham.
Could be away for 2 weeks at a time on big removals that were far away.
Workmates were a crazy bunch on the edge, but I still have a chuckle at the memories.
Hi sorry to hi-jack the thread

Can’t choose between me first 2 trucks really! The blue 142 just after passing my test in 1990 still 21years old-then 6 months later getting the McKellar 142 complete with big boys stacks!

Yep, name changed to just “Bullens” later on but still same colour.
Best times for me were from 1989 to 1998 driving F10 , F12 and FH12 Volvos around Europe, everywhere from Moscow to Porto , Ankara to Helsinki and most places inbetween.
I was single and if I wanted to would do 7 or 8 turnarounds in Dover on the run, boss used to love this, and so did I !
If I could do it now I probably would but that sort of work has long gone, plus Im married with 2 kids now (although sometimes…)
