Alex how do you and the company rate the MANs , ? reliability , fuel consumption , etc etc.

Thanks for asking Shugg. HPH have had a variety of trucks in the past including Scanias, Volvo, ERF and Atkinsons .

In general terms the MANs are very popular, Chris asked the drivers eighteen months ago what lorries we would prefer and most of the lads said stick with MAN. Personally I like the room in the cab, the tool lockers, good all round vision and that it is quiet but I’ve always had a soft spot for MANs. I should add that I don’t feel as tired as I did after a days driving as I did when I drove the Scania.

The lads in the Garage like working on the MANs and get good support from the dealer on Walton Summit. I don’t think they are more or less reliable trucks than anything else out there. Some of our work is very, very heavy and some is very light so the fleet average is 8.5mpg which isn’t too bad when you think some of the trucks are '05 plates (mine is a '57) our main problem is the height of our trailers. We have got two TGX lorries with a bigger ADK waiting to go on the road, so hopefully the mpg should start to improve.

The new trucks have got a new design ‘wrap’ style livery so I’ll try to get some pictures on TNUK.

Thanks again for asking,

W

Many thanks Alex for your very sensible post , I first drove MANs at a well known super market RDC in the early 1990s and immediately realised they were a very very well engineered truck , and always referred to them as German ERFs , now that I am semi`retired I still drive on a part time basis with an operator who runs a 100% MAN fleet of about 60 trucks on both container and general haulage and like you still find them excellent trucks to drive and operate . Again many thanks Alex for your reply .

Well, I was tootling around in a DAF SSC 530, 55 plate til two weeks ago when I manage to totally rearrange the cab position. It now sits 6" further back on the chassis then it did before I hit a horsebox up the arse at high speed late on a Sunday evening.
She is sat in the yard looking very sorry for herself and as a punishment, I am driving around in a MAN 220 with the manouverability of a ■■■■■■■ submarine on local pallet delivery work

That’ll teach ya bear glad ur ok though

+1^^

And me… a different one every day too :frowning:. Some people drive/live in filth… first 10 minutes of every shift is dedicated to ‘cab hygiene’.

Apologies for the terrible quality of the picture…

Dc Aldridge I take it see you at Severnside graham

There were 5 of the buggers in there. Apparently according to the insurance co, they were all Derby winners

I drive a Mercedes Actros Megaspace 2546 , had from new now 12 months old , its ok to live in , pulls ok on european fridge work , they were kicked out at a good price as the new shape were coming .
Build quality on these ones isnt anything special , new ones seem better put together . HTH.

I’ve heard that some of Wisemans wagons are runing on LPG and getting very high mpg’s.
Do you kno if this is right?

I know some of the Glasgow trucks run on biofuel but no idea on mpg as we’re still on normal diesel. We tend to get the 2nd hand crap from other depots anyway so it’ll be years before we get it in Aberdeen

DAF 105 XF 460 , good all round truck so it is!

Most nights I drive a Scania G440 and on the odd night a Daf CF 85 eight wheeler. The Daf cab has more leg room than the Scania but is let down by the slow AS Tronic gearbox. I am not a fan of any of these electro pneumatic shift gearboxes as my brain and hand multi task much faster. All to do with fuel economy so I am told, that is not true unless you drive in manual mode.
The Daf 105 XF 460 with twin steer is a better more economic tractor to run than the Scania.

I drive this little purring machine. The 220 is a lovely sounding little lump.
