What to expect on tippers

the title says it all. i was offered a job on tippers today and i have the luxury of the weekend to think it over. ive never worked on tippers before, so i have no idea what to expect doing the job. any advice gratefully received

I have done tippers on road repair work.It doesnt need to be hairy Rsed stuff.I enjoyed the work with a good crowd of men to work with.

Depends what type of job you are on to be honest,and sometimes the size of the company.
First day I had on tippers was for a company working on the M74 link. Was very relaxed,no pressure,no hassle. Doddle. “Just wait there the now driver,not quite ready”. No probs,paper and a brew.
Then the 74 was completed and it was onto a “1 load from here,bring another one back and do it 5 times a day”. On a 45 mile round trip. Through busy parts of town. It was only easy to do if you didnt do anything silly like stop at traffic lights or take a lunch break. Very high pressure.
Then I went to another company who are a big well known aggregate supplier in Scotland with thier own quarries (5 I think) and it was quite relaxed for them. Maybe 1 job in the morning to a building site then just some stone or sand transfers to concrete plants after that.
Tipper work gets a bad rep but if you just take everything as it comes then its actually one of the better driving jobs imo as it changes every so often what your doing and presents a challenge when your going into a mucky building site in pouring rain and your spinning out all over the place. Ah good times… :laughing:
Speaking of which,if you take the job get a good pair of rigger boots and a hi viz jacket. You’ll get away with ordinary steel toe cap boots at this time of year and a hi viz vest but come November when its chucking it down with rain and your up to your knees in muck and clay trying to shut a tailgate with wet sand stuck at the edge and the door wont lock shut you’ll want some protection from the elements! :laughing:

At least you wont be on multidrop.

And thats why I’ll stay on general. Partly because I’m a bit of a wuss.

Thanks all and thanks for the tips snowman. i do know that they do a lot of tarmac and have been warned that it can be a ■■■■■ on a cold day. cant be worse than multi drop though.

Hope you got thick skin because when you fall of the tarmac machine you get called all the names under the sun

It’s the same as any haulage job some firms are good many are crap.

Here’s a great benefit of tipper work;
I’m in the centre of Oxford now waiting for a site to open (no that’s not it this is a rare occasion). Parked nearby are four other lorries, all of which the drivers are busy unstrapping loads on flatbeds, handballing food into cafes and colleges or manhandling cages.
I’m sat there, feet up on dashboard (boots on for all you tarts :laughing: ) drinking coffee and admiring the fanny walking past.
