Hi All,
I recently passed my Class 2 and am currently working with an animal feed company delivering feed to farms, the job is quite good and although I am gaining valuable experience I am trying to get something closer to home as I am out all week living elsewhere and only get home at weekends and have an hour to travel each way.
I have managed to get interviews with ARR Craib and Wiseman Dairies but for both would still have an hour to travel each way although would get to stay at home each night.
Also have an offer of a job with a local skip firm driving 13 tonners, and another local dairy firm but think this is only on 7.5 tonners and Class 2 now and again.
Not sure what to do?!
Better be sleeping in cab (if I understood it right…) than working at firms where you have a 15 hour shift then reduced daily rest (9 hour rest) (3 times per week)… which 1 hour each way + personal time would leave you even worse off.
My advice would be stick with it for a year or two then move on if your still not liking it… or look for something more than an hour closer to home…
Some companies are really picky about long career histories…
Hope this helps.
Skip firm is a possibility if you can stand the smell & mud, you’ll be home every night (most start early/5-6 am & finish early 2-3 pm) some run Artics to recycling plants & soon to be forgotten/‘thank God’ Landfills. They also run 6 & 8 wheelers along with the standard 4 wheel/13 tonners skip wagons, so you could get experience on all the modes & eventually gain your class 1.
