What to do...

Started work with a local tipper firm monday on a 8 wheeler, just done my 3rd shift today and its hard graft alot of flying about and they put it on you work wise, all for a measly £8 and £12 after 8 minus dinner break. I’m not used to this type of work as i’ve always done class 1. Would i be a fool to ring up in the morning and say this is not for me but cheers.

Not at all. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, I don’t think it would be mine to be fair. At least you tried and you’ve not left them in the lurch

As the OP just did to you!

A lot of people slag tipper drivers off but let me tell you, as you have now found out, it’s hard work. Far harder than most class 1 jobs.

Did it myself a few years back, before and after the tipper work I was driver arctics and I know which one was harder that’s for sure.
The thing with tipper work is you don’t really get waiting time so therefore more time loaded means more time on the road actually working instead of feet up reading the paper whilst waiting to be loaded or unloaded.
Another point that used to catch a lot of the newer lads out was the roads and off road driving you do. If your a class 1 RDC driver used to mainly motorway miles then you have to start travelling for miles on B roads and off road on tips, building sites etc then it’s a culture shock. Also a lot of drivers underestimate 8 wheelers. Arctics bend 8 wheelers don’t ! I’ve seen artics get into places 8 wheelers either can’t or have to take a good few shunts.
Admittedly there are some idiots driving tippers but like I said it’s hard work and non stop most days.

Answer to your original question is if it ain’t for you tell them and move on.
You spend most of your time at work so no point doing it if it’s not for you.
8 quid an hours shocking as well. I was getting near that when I drove them 15 years or so back.

Why did you take the job on £8.00 per hour?
Why are you flying about? Why are you grafting hard?I did tipper work but reasonable pay and no flying around.

Took the job as it was something different, and i’ve been working with 3/4 other drivers last few days and was told to follow them around so found myself more or less chasing to keep up.

The fastest vehicle in a convoy is always at the back…because he has to be in order to keep up! Made the same mistake (once) as a novice motorbiker joining my first club. Later joined another group where the slowest was just behind the leader and who was told to ride strictly at their own pace and no one was to overtake anyone else. Worked a treat. Biggest thing was “At your own pace”.
Someone’s yanking your chain.
Or it’s a clever strategy to make you drive faster and make more money…

Unless you are lost, why are you trying to keep up with the heroes.

The secret to a happy working life is to set your stall out from day one, work at a pace comfortable enough for you to continue into your dotage.
The only exception to this is where hell driver pay still exists and you can knock up £20k more than average by doing another half a weeks work every week, not applicable here as you’re on hourly pay.
