What sort of money should a class 2 HIAB driver be on?

Brother in law has been to a job interview with a local builders merchants. However he was asked what his current salary was and apparently they have offered him the job but only matched his salary. He says they never asked him what his expected salary should be.

He’s been offered 31000 matching what he’s already on. They are offering to train him to use the HIAB though as well.

Anybody got any thoughts on what he should do or what sort of money a HIAB driver should be on ■■

Anyone else think it’s a little cheeky only matching his salary without discussing what he expects? 31k divided by 52.143 divide by 50 is only 11.89 per hour

Lesson #1. Never give your true salary in an interview, always exaggerate. If they beat it then it’s happy days, if they don’t then you stay put.

Builders merchants is never normally the highest pay, with the trade off being that its often one of the most family friendly jobs within HGV industry in terms of hours. No silly starts, no silly finishes.

Hi, builders merchants tend to be £10.50 to £12.50 an hour
Probably more in London S/E England.
Normal working hours will be 7.00-7.30 to 5.00 and some Saturdays.

Your mate has always got the option to say thanks but no thanks and stay where he is, but as someone else already said it’s always a good idea to stick a couple of grand on when asked your current salary.
A lot of guys tend to stick at builders merchants for a couple of years and then move onto specialist haulage using crane for loading and unloading.

There’s no legal obligation to tell a potential employer what your current salary is

Why spout a pack of lies whats wrong with being honest with people nowadays

Just to add I’m not sure what the point is in asking someone what their salary is, I mean its sort of a “this is what we pay” kinda thing isn’t it? Every job I’ve gone for its a “this is the rates” then it’s either a thanks or thanks but no thanks.

Also I’m not sure that they’d jump at the chance to give more money than their pay structure to a person who they’re going to train to surely? Like there isn’t many bargaining chips I the hand of the driver in this one

Fair point. Being able to hold your head up high will be a massive consolation when working next to a guy on £3k a year more than you.

Yep…whoever coined the phrase ‘‘Honesty is the best policy’’ was at best naive and at worst a bloody fool to himself.

But hey! … ‘‘People like me never change’’ … as Conor once told me on here in his own inimitable way.

My best mate is a HIAB driver he gets £12.05ph. That’s in Yorkshire

It’s all well and good inflating your salary wages to make it sound like you are earning a lot more but sooner or later you’ll be giving them your P45 from previous employment which will tell them what you have earnt.

So you could be marking your card early as untrustworthy / ■■■■■■■■■■■

I was offered a job at a leading builders merchant 2 weeks ago.

My job at the time was multi drop fridge work with a lot of handballing, 4am starts, depot 25miles away on 31k (45hrs). Overtime on a flat rate, and sat (if you had enough hours) at x1.5. This was however my first HGV role so I stuck it out for a month, but always was doing overtime everyday.

The builders merchant offered me 29k for being a cover driver covering a 40mile radius, with 45p fuel expense a mile on any depot away from my home depot which was 22miles from my home address.

I asked them to change my home depot to my home town and am willing to cover work anywhere with the 45p/mile expense and match the 31k am on. They never got back to me. Oh, they also wanted me to go to Birmingham (100miles away) for 2 weeks to complete their training at their school.

Having zero real life HIAB experience, I’ve just been offered £18/hr on agency for 4 weeks which I accepted.

Jewsons by any chance? I was looking into getting my hiab or adr but opted for adr after I walked out the jewsons interview for a similar job laughing at the salary offered. Now on fuel and paid salary and its the best job I’ve had.

Because it’s a business deal. Provided you’re honest with everything else, no potential employer will worry about you trying to get a better pay rate. In face I’d be inclined to think it shows initiative.

If the depot he is working from is running. More than 1 truck surely he will be paid the same as the other driver. Thought there was some law can’t have 2 people doing same.job out same place on different pay rates

My best mate is a HIAB driver he gets £12.05ph. That’s in Yorkshire

I’d be disappointed on that… You can get £11.50 pH these days driving a box van for Sainsbury’s… Class 2 work is severely underpaid as far as I’m concerned.

I passed my class 1 (straight from car) and took a class 2 agency job which was paid £13 ph and at the end of the day I went “class 2 isn’t for me at all”… Far too much work for little pay.

Since then I’ve been trunking to RDCs on class 1 on £16.50 an hour and can choose my hours so can’t complain.

Box vans for sainsburys isn’t Mon-Fri 7-5. I agree it’s not great pay but he left driving the buses for £10ph so a big difference and you could argue it’s worth the smaller pay packet for steady hours.

It all depends what you can get agreed with the managers at Sainsbury’s… We had people there who didn’t do weekends and some didn’t work past 7pm. They have a policy where you can submit your preferred working days and hours and they’ll try and keep you by adhering to them the best they can. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t like working the vans for Sainsbury’s but class 2 work should be a step up in pay and going from £11.50 to £12 isn’t worth the class 2 qualification.

But he said the £12 HIAB rate was for Yorkshire. £11.50 rate for Sainsbury’s 3.5T is the rate in Surrey, where the Class 2 rate is £16.
