What song takes ye back and why?

CRACK ON TO MACON:
…Can you remember the DJ’S name on Luxembourg he was really quite mad and
used to have some weird and wonderful caller’s on his show

Radio Luxembourg!!, now that takes me back to when I started “continental” work in the early 80`s. I have great memories of being parked up in the evening around Europe, especially in southern Europe in the warmer summer months, sitting outside the truck with some beers or a bottle or two of the local wine and listening to RL. Used to have to leap in and out that cab every 10 minutes to move the tuning nob on the radio one micron to the left or right (now that shows your age if you remember doing that!! ) as the signal used to fade in and out alot.

Dj`s from then I remember are Benny Brown, funny as (zb) , Emperor Rosco, Tony (■■) Prince.

Used to love listening to their outside broadcasts from clubs down in Spain and Italy and if there was a thunder storm anywhere within a thousand miles then it used to pick it up.

Great days…really missed :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

hiya,
Even remember Radio Caroline, i must be older than tea.
thanks harry long retired.

That DJ’S name i was thinking of was Bob Stewart he was a yank or Canadien summit like
that z/b nutter he was i was listening to him when Smurf who i was running with at the time
we was half way round the HO CHI MINH he called me on the CB and told me about the HERALD in Zee Bee
stopped at a bar and phoned home to reassure her indoor’s and carried on not realizing the true extent of
what had happened. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Radio Luxembourg? Radio Caroline? I remember the very last broadcast from Radio London,so how old does that make me? (Don’t answer!)

Rod Stewart-Maggie May.I was just about to leave school when Rod had the No1 album and single on both sides of the Atlantic, and I had been a Rod fan since the early day’s of The Faces in the late sixties. In fact,I’m still a big Rod fan.

The album Autobahn by Kraftwerk brings back memories of when I used to shunt trucks around the yard in Faversham,it was being played by an Irish driver who had come in to tip a load of beef and I thought it a wonderful driving album.

Rush Rush by Paula Abdul.I got the album with the free stamps they used to give out at the BP in Capellen, and I played it all the way to Italy.
And all weekend,I had flat batteries on the Monday morning :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :frowning:

The only one who springs to mind at the moment was Ugly Ray Terret but there were a few of them and one of the earliest I can remember was Jack Jackson and his cat on a Sunday night.

I have been meaning to ask you this question for over two years. Are you Bob The Mayor of Canvey and did you or do you remember who had the C.B. name Pinocchio One running Italy in 1987 ?.

no mate the mayor of canvey is a guy called Barry Cleaver but i suppose i could claim to be the mayor of Milan haha

great noses after some of the storie’s they have told HAHAHAHA :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

So presuming you left school at 15 as was allowed in the olden days  Maggie May topped both charts in October 1971 so you must be about 54

Here are few of mine

1975 Rod Stewart Sailing, My first ever journey with a HGV in to Europe on the Norstar from Hull — Rotterdam. Playing on the ships radio was the top twenty & sailing was at number 1 as we set sail.

Mul of Kintyre Wings

Always reminds me of Frank Macshane at Fearns Tankers running down the M5 every time it came on the radio, He would weave across all three lanes while ever it was playing and the road was clear.

Imagine John Lennon
1980 I had just pulled of the M18 at Thorne, when the news came on the radio
Imagine there’s no countries It isn’t hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

I heard it through the Grapevine, Marvin Gaye
1984 I was driving through Luxembourg in the early hours, I had just been listening to the song on tape & switched over to the
2 O’clock news to hear he’d been shot.

Got a Ticket for my Destination. Paul Simon

I always played this one when I loaded for anywhere in the EU except UK.
I’m sitting in the railway station. Got a ticket for my destination. On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand.
And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band. Homeward bound, I wish I was, Homeward bound,

Country Roads, John Denver

I always played this one when I loaded for home

Country Roads, take me home, to the place I belong: West Virginia, mountain momma, Take me home, country roads.

Those were the days my friend , Mary Hopkins

I think of these words all the time.

Those were the days my friend We thought they’d never end We’d sing and DRIVE forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose We’d fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way.

Cheers Mel

Used to tune into Luxembourg at night when I was running to the m/e in the mid '70’s.
The signal would fade out in southern Yugo, but I could always pick up a freak signal in Mosul, northern Iraq at about 2 in the morning!

Speaking of picking up radio stations, there was a station called laser 558 that picked up when RL stopped, I used to listen to this quite a lot. I’ve also picked up Capital Gold in Spain & Italy.

hiya,
Winchester Cathedral, blew a tyre off in it’s shadow when the song was in the charts, sang the opening lines (badly) to the man at National Tyres when he requested my location, did’nt cut any ice though, still took them forever to come out.
thanks harry long retired.

Heard a couple of songs this week that instantly took me back 30 years.
“Take me home country roads”.Used to have it on a John Denver tape and would play it on the return leg of a m/e trip.
If I’d had a ■■■■ trip and been away for around 6 weeks,I would get a little emotional at the lines,“The radio reminds me of my home far away, driving down the road I get the feeling that I should have been home yesterday”
The other great song was,“You aint seen nothin’ yet” by Bachman Turner Overdrive that I would play at full blast while tanking it down the Tapline.

And to fit in with thread revival, comes the shock news that The Monkees are reforming. That must be about 6 times…

I always confuse Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch with the Monkees who were Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, and Englishman Davy Jones.

hiya,
“Show me the way to go home i’m tired and i want to go to bed” I never could map read.
