robroy:
When I had my trucks I was always aware of drivers who had diesel cars and kept a close eye especially on the casual drivers fuel consumption.
There you have it guys, drive a diesel car and drive lorries and you’re automatically assumed to be a thief.
Take it as you like Conor you’ve never owned trucks so it’s one of the very few things that you (think you) know every [zb] thing about.
Fyi I caught at least 2 nicking diesel, and they were both smart arses like you and thought they could get away with it…wrong.
Cheers.
Bloody hell robroy, you should have put driver facing cameras in too and caught them smoking, eating and using a mobile whilst driving too!!
Fuse lit, tin hat on, steps back and waits.
Nah no need for that.
I treated my drivers like grown ups, not school kids, they reciprocated, and I only ever had one leave me, …maybe because of that.
Agencies were not as widespread in those days (80s) so casual drivers were just guys who turned up or rang looking for work, and there were times I was totally stuck for night runs, so I had to be a bit less selective …shall we say.
I know someone who would wear a suit to an interview. He was made redundant a few years ago and was quite happy to jog up to retirement on the dole. So if the job centre sent him for a dirty job he would wear a suit and asked about showers and changing rooms etc . If it was a clean job he would go like a tramp, and if he wasn’t sure he would ask about unions and shop stewards etc. He jogged up to retirement as he planned.
Got there early, had to wait for 40 mins, still no sign of anyone from transport so the guy at reception took me to the office.
Stobarts guy then said he’s only got night shifts available. I can only do days. Came back to Sheffield disappointed to be honest as i was looking forward to it.
The guy said the communication between themselves and HR is rubbish therefore HR assumed all shifts are available.

Search is on.
That’s appaling…
Behaviour and organisation. What a complete waste of your time, money and effort. Maybe you’ve dodged a bullet if this how the operation is run?

Good luck finding something else.
Cheers bud.
The reception guy said a guy came in for an assessment couple of days ago and he waited for an HOUR. I was like wtf! he then said it’s not always like this.
I was excited because it being the biggest or one of the biggest logistic/s’markets in the country, it’d be an awesome place to start.

Hmmmm the word ‘awesome’ would not be the word I’d use for the prospect of working at Stobbys on a Tesco job, nor would I be anywhere near ‘excited’.
There are far far better jobs out there mate, keep looking.

Yeh know what you mean mate, I was just trying to bring you back down to earth a bit.
Just keep trying, knock on doors,.and ring up, something WILL turn up.
Would you not prefer tramping to mundane supermarket day type work?

Oi! Nowt wrong with supermarket work [emoji12]
To be honest pal, shame you can’t do nights as that’s when you get sent further away or on more collections, eg. Shop delivery then onwards to RDC…or bedtime I call it. Only Bibbys where we have to sit in a portakabin on our hands, everywhere else is in cab bedtime for £16ph

I’m confused now. What’s ‘day’ tramping? i thought tramping is sleeping in cab and if its a day job, why sleep in cab when you can go home? (i am a complete novice here as you know)
Stobby did email me saying they have ‘day’ tramping available at Sherburn in Elmet. How does day tramping work? sleep in cabin during day and go home to sleep again? lol

The idea is that you do your work in the daytime, but take your daily Rest (and sleep in the lorry) at night.

I didn’t say ‘day tramping’ did I now… but it’s working through the day and kipping in the cab at night…the opposite to night tramping in fact, which I could not think of anything worse.
You ask ‘Why sleep in the cab when you can go home’, ok if you have to ask that question it sounds like being a day man is for you, …but don’t listen nor judge it by those on here who know nothing about it, and define tramping as the stereotypical crap as '‘Kipping in a tin box/wet wipe washes/unpaid security guard/crap in a carrier/lay bys’ etc etc…it’s bs .
Tramping can be a good life…but ONLY if you do it properly, trust me on that.

You said “tramping to mundane supermarket day type work?” ‘tramping’ and ‘day’ were used isn’t that the same as ‘day tramping’?
Apologies for sounding dumb but i’m here to learn.
I’ve never judged a tramper. As you said, it can be done properly. But if you sleep in cabin and then work… what about family? partner? pretty sure that’s going to ruin it. Different/another story i guess. Leave it.
Also, do some people live like this? no house/flat and just sleep in cabin when its bed time. If they lose the job for whatever reason then they get a hotel or something until they find a tramping job again?
