you should stand on your brakes and remove yourself from the gene pool for everyones safety

Unfortunatly there is a very small percentage of truckers that are thick as [zb]! Your best bet is to drive at the speed limit if it is safe to do so and leave a bigger distance between you and the vehicle in front so you can brake more gradually if needed. Pull over when you can and get the phone number of whoever he/she works for and tell his/her gaffer of his unsafe driving technique.
Exactly what I done a few months ago. phoned his gaffer then the driver phoned me to say sorry, then I found out that the dad of the driver in question worked at my place. then other drivers in my place told me that the driver in question is a complete merchant banker!!
The best thing you can do is put your foot down and drive off into the distance, nothing else puts the message across more than you driving away never to be seen again.

Tried that, was going as fast as I dare, 55mph in a 40mph limit for Trucks but he was still about 20 foot behind me. In all seriousness the only safe way to travel that I could see was to slow right down. Lincolnshire roads here are the worst in Britain for fatalities.

I’m not condoning the trucker’s actions - far from it in fact - but something isn’t computing here. The most you “dared” to travel at was 55mph in a 40mph for trucks (so that presumably wasn’t the speed limit for you from the way you’ve worded it) so I’m having a hard time understanding why you are unable to do more than 55mph but yet the larger, heavier and more ■■■■■■■■■■ truck has no such problems. Are we missing part of the story here or do I understand correctly that you are unable to control your car above 55mph?

ok from this i’m guessing its a national limited road ie 60mph, you dont feel safe going that extra 5mph? WUM for sure. i dont care if it supposed to be 40mph for trucks, i feel safer and i’m sure car drivers feel happier following me at 56 than risking their lives trying to overtake me at silly points doing 40mph.
If you do 60 within 3 miles you’ll be far enough ahead not to have to worry about me behind you, But you still have to worry about Mr/Mrs impatient wanting to do 80 passed me, then realise they have to move in quickly to avoid the artic coming the other way, Oh wait there isnt room, 2 casualties when they could have been avoided

The problem I have is that I remember that bit in the Highway Code that says you should only travel at a speed where you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear in front of you.

So now there’s bad visibility as well! Or other traffic? Or winding roads?
I have a sneaking suspicion you want to wind up some people both here and on the road. I’d like to hear from the truck driver that was following you. I wonder if his version of your story would be significantly different.
Getting back to the question you originally asked in the title of your post, might I suggest you get a life!
Glen Clark:
When I am driving my car and I see a lorry travelling very close behind, so close that I know he could not stop if I had to brake suddenly, the only thing I can think of doing is to slow down for safety’s sake. I guess the lorry driver then thinks why is he going so slow. How can I get the message to the pillock that the reason I am going so slow is that he is following so close?
My advice to you lad, is pull of the road as soon you can and get out of the vehicle and get a bus or other public transport home. The roads are bad enough without some brainless [zb] as yourself on them, just my opinion. Isn’t it blindingly obvious that you should just give it some gas for a couple of minutes to give yourself a safe distance and peace of mind its not rocket science, as for the pillock in the wagon he’ll be thinking I must not come of the limiter for no man sorry but these are the times we live in now my friend.
See how many knob ends have got an HGV licence? Scary,eh?
Only thing you can do in that situation, if accelerating to increase the distance or pulling over is not an option, is to slow down until you have both your own and his stopping distance in front of you. It’s a no brainer.

I have already got a very good life, Thank You.
Thats Why I want to keep it.
And Thats why I slow down when some pillock is following 10 feet behind my rear bumper.
I don’t like driving slow, wasting time. My time is worth as much as yours.

You make this sound as if it’s a regular occurrence. If it is, then you need to ask why you insist on putting your life at risk on the roads…
I simply don’t believe that every truck that follows you is sitting 10 ft off your rear bumper! You’re obviously here to wind people up, and as I said earlier, need to get a life!
