Everything I’ve driven in the last few years (08 or newer) has been an auto!
Companies are watching their costs & manufacturers too because most trucks are leased I think. Apparently you can get really good or really bad fuel returns on a manual depending on the driver, auto just averages it all out…
All our scanias and dafs are manuals. Everything else is auto
i think there was a bit of a trend starting some years ago. most firms were going down the automatic route, but it looks like they are opting for manuals now.
i do like an auto on uk work, but not european.
Auto everytime and perfect for a one legged driver like me.
Ours are all auto with the option of driving in manual which I do sometimes as these MAN auto boxes do get a bit confused at times
Are 3 pedal scania opticruise motors classed as full or semi auto?
todays drivers are of too poor a standard to drive manuals without excessive wear and tear, so it makes sense to get autos

Semi
Off hand I can’t remember driving a vehicle registered 2008 or later that was manual, and even most of the 2007 vehicles I can remember driving were automatics.

Bit of a sweeping generalisation.

An average of 4 clutches in 5 years doing Trollying, would you consider that good?

Maybe you should learn to drive mate
To reduce losses from internal drag and to increase fuel efficiency, modern gearboxes are built of lighter and less robust materials than before and would not survive the abuse the majority of the professional drivers can and do dish out. Most auto’s (manual boxes with automatic operation actually), take the variable driver quality out of the equation and have sophisticated self preservation software to prevent such abuse. Thats why everything is auto these day and thank God for that, because the thought of driving a 16 speed box with a manual clutch and having to work for living again fills me with dread.
Drove 2 61 plate Daf 18t’s yesterday and both were manual - 6 speed
When at Maritime, as Ovlov said, as brand new trucks came in, only the DAF XF and Scania’s were manual - 4 over 4 + split for Daf, 3 over 3 + split for Scania, and they’re all limited to 52mph which caused a sign put up in the window advising the scania’s only ever used 11th gear (6 low) not 12th because 12th was under the green…
Not sure why they had manual DAF’s and auto MAN’s, when the DAF auto gearbox programming is better than the MAN
Mostly Auto’s in my experience now, but still a few exceptions, the 2 18t’s I drove yesterday do a lot of farm work, so the manual box kinda makes sense, but they were VERY basic trucks

There is really no excuse for this amount of wear and tear!
too many
Never even sat in a lorry with auto gearbox,I drove automatic car once that took some getting used to
Still largely Manual’s in the aggregates sector, as of yet Auto’s can be a bit confuddled off road.
